One of the best things about Hannibal is that while he is very lean and muscled and terrifyingly majestic he also has a cute little tum
^^^ Full of people
It’s always awesome that it tells you how much Mads was committed to embodying Hannibal when he refers to Hannibal as “I” by mistake. But the real gem here is him referring to Will as “the little fucked up Will Graham” 😭
The little fucked up Will Graham and his little fucked up hallucinatory menage a quatre (Mads forgot the freaky Hannibal stag man)…..
(I found the quote post on pinterest, lmk if anyone knows the OP!!)
Hannibal in Cuba…. Relaxed, moisturized, in his lane, flourishing, kissing his beautiful husband every morning….. living the dream
Will was a special agent who hunted killers to get a taste of the darkness he wouldn’t let himself have, Hannibal was a serial killer who worked as a psychiatrist to find someone who could accept his darkness. Will grew up moving from place to place doing boating mechanic work with a single dad and paved his way on his own genius and merits, Hannibal grew up in an orphanage and was taken in by an aunt and uncle who had lost much of their wealth in wartime and paved his way on his own genius and merits. Will masked his darkness to shun and hide it, Hannibal masked his to facilitate it. Will isolated himself in life because he could never truly fit in, Hannibal isolated himself by living inside personas that cut off any true connection. Hannibal had a loving family and a perfect world torn away from him, Will never had any point of reference for family and fulfillment beyond idealism and social norms.
Will used his empathy on others to distance himself from his own needs and problems, Hannibal used his disregard for others to cause problems and distance himself from his own. Will was having a crisis of self and worldview because of the encephalitis Hannibal fostered, Hannibal was having a crisis of self and worldview because of his developing feelings for Will. Hannibal made killing into an art form so that he wouldn’t need to seek depth of feeling through anything else, Will took a job that exposed him to the worst and most gruesome killers so that he didn’t seek that craving out himself. Hannibal amassed and appreciated as many luxurious and cathartic things as he could to block off the hole inside himself, Will lived with necessities, drank, and popped pain pills to block off the hole inside himself. Of course they were often undecided about each other, of course they were irrational and hurt each other and betrayed each other even as it hurt them the same.
Of course they both struggled impossibly with the fact that they felt for and loved each other. Accepting that would be accepting the parts of themselves they hated that hurt the most, leaving behind the comfort of the certainty that muted suffering brought to place their whole selves in the hands of another when all anyone had ever done was harm and misunderstand. NBC’s Hannibal is about the inherent horror of having to face yourself, undiluted, through the mirror of another. NBC’s Hannibal is about realizing that if love is rooted in understanding, you have to tear the hollow world you’ve built yourself down to have what you’ve always fought against wanting. And most of all, it’s about realizing that the fighting does nothing but make you want it more. It’s about removing your armor, kneeling to bare your neck, and putting down your sword.
NBC’s Hannibal, in its entirety, is about love in its rawest form.
The fact that the some of the best “character when they’re older/character when they’re younger” casting I’ve ever seen was totally unintentional and multiple years apart never fails to feel crazy to me…. Gaspard Ulliel as Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising (2007) & Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter in NBC’s Hannibal (2013-2015)
Sometimes I write myself into my own little world where Hannibal still had a season four that ended like Thomas Harris’s Hannibal novel with some detail tweaks, because tv Will is really just Clarice poured into a Will-shaped outline. And I’m watching it play out on the screen instead of it taking shape behind my docs app cursor when I’m feeling extra nostalgic. Sighhhh
Never getting over how Will’s world was shattering and his worldview was being helplessly torn open and he was changing and becoming confused and vulnerable and angry and needy and devastated because of the feverish surge of his encephalitis and the manipulation of and shift in how he saw things…. And at the same time Hannibal’s world was shattering and his worldview was being helplessly torn open and he was changing and becoming confused and vulnerable and angry and needy and devastated because he was feeling genuine connection and romantic attachment for perhaps the first time in his entire life. Love being a form of insanity, a blurring of identity and self and perception and logic…. Insanity being a form of love, heated and clinging and seemingly irrevocable, something that holds you in its grasp…. Bryan Fuller when I catch youuuuu
