Getting to Know...
Fanny Andersen.
Fanny Andersen returns with the brand new single ‘Wake Up’. Fanny delivers a perfect slice of catchy pop, showcasing a punchy beat and achingly honest lyricism that reflects the depths of Fanny’s most bleak periods. In the current global lockdown, this is a timely release and many will relate to Fanny’s sassy ‘throwing in the towel’ lyrics. The song comes complete with a video that features a tapestry of snappy visuals, texturising the wave of emotions that Fanny relays in the lyrics.
We had a chat with Fanny about ‘Wake Up’and it’s video, her influences and more. Read the Q&A below.
Let's start from the beginning.. Please tell us a bit about yourself and what it was that led you to make music.
"I'm from a place called Ekeberg in Oslo, Norway. I’ve always loved to sing since I was a toddler I think, but it was when I was cast as Annie in a school play when I was 13 my parents and I understood that I actually could sing. I started taking vocals lessons and went to music high school to pursue the dream of working with music. It was very clear in my mind that that was what i wanted to do with my life, music. I also was so lucky to have parents who was super supportive about it."
Who/what are your biggest influences?
"I would say I don’t have any specific that I listened to for inspiration specifically, I think all kind of music influences me. And a song can be an influence because of the drum loop, the top line, the synth etc. But what I find the most interesting to listen to myself, is music that doesn’t make sense to me. Songs where I’m, after its done, wondering how they could write or make a song like that. I think I listen to music in a very analytic way, without thinking very much about it. I always try to find the structure of the song I’m listening to, and with artists like Frank Ocean, Rex Orange County, Tyler the Creator etc where I really don’t understand how they’ve written their amazing music I can’t stop listening to it. So I would say they are my favourite artists right now. And even though my music is so, so different from their music, I think they are my biggest influences right now."
You've just released your new single and video 'Wake Up'. What was the inspiration behind the song and the visuals?
"’Wake Up’ was made when I was in a very strange state of mind. The sentiment of it is a pretty simple way of explaining that feeling of just not wanting to wake up. The feeling of hopelessness and you know, darkness. I think the song kinda represent everything that was difficult for me to talk about at that point in time, so I wrote about it instead. And i think with everything that’s going on now it’s an important message, you know mental health is so important to be open and talk about. And with the situation now, I bet a lot of people are having a hard time getting up in the morning. So to be able to give out this song right now feels very right, and to encourage people to seek help if they’re struggling.
"For the music video I wanted to reflect the chaos i was feeling back then, and with my best friend as director and filmer for the project we created a video that is just that. It’s chaotic, messy, but at the same time beautiful."
What’s your songwriting/creative process?
"Its so different every time. I usually have a notepad full of different text idea, concepts or just words I’ve thought of that I think sounds cool. And in the studio, when the producer starts with a production, that kinda kick starts my creative process. I always get super inspired working with great producer, and i think just a synth sound that I love can inspire me to write a whole song. I don’t really know how to explain it, and it can be very different for time to time."
Finally, how have you been coping with the COVID-19 lockdown. Are you working on anything? And what do you have planned for when we're back to normality?
"I’ve been working loads. With the technology we have now it’s so easy to get work done even though we’re stuck in our room, and that has been quite a mind blowing realisation. I’ve been doing loads of sessions over Skype and created new music. That and doing meetings has been the main thing, to get the EP ready. And to get this next single up and ready for release. When we’re back to normal I really want to move to London, so let’s hope that’s as soon as possible."
‘Wake Up’ is out now.
