Requests I’ve Gotten Which Just Don’t Work
So, I have this series I’m doing on TikTok about why all your favourite books, films, and video games need a queer Deaf protagonist (because I’m a queer Deaf actor hoping desperately for a job) and I thought I’d give you a list of requests I’ve gotten and why I won’t do them.
Anything by Rainbow Rowell: her first book felt so racist.
Attack on Titan: it feels fascist.
Avatar (the blue people): I’m not painting myself blue.
Avatar the Last Airbender: I’m white.
Cats the Musical: I’m not pretending to be a cat.
Disney Descendants: I don’t want to get sued.
Harry Potter: I’m trans and have self-respect. It’s shit.
Iron Widow: See Avatar reason.
Marvel: I hate Marvel.
My Hero Academia: I don’t like the fandom.
Peaky Blinders: I don’t think it would be funny. Also, they rejected me even as an extra.
Percy Jackson: It bores me, it already has one, and the fandom is too demanding.
Sandman: … I genuinely don’t understand how you expect me to insert a character into that.
Sex Education: I auditioned, they rejected, I’m still unfairly bitter.
Steven Universe: See My Hero Academia.
Twilight: I can think of ONE joke.
Warrior Cats: I’m not pretending to be a cat.
I’m living in my childhood bedroom and have a day job. My budget isn’t that big.
“This more of a realization than a confession. Every year I am blown away by how many fans have not gone to a show, hanson day/ Tulsa or are now just getting around to listening to an album or becoming a member. It seems like the fandom is so small but it's way bigger than I thought. I'm so excited for everyone experiencing their firsts!“
i hope their relationship gets restored in season three (;_;)
I really hate how some male fans treat female characters because you know it’s just their sexism showing.
“Ugh, why are the writers highlighting Felicity so much lately?” “Ugh, she’s such a bad character, kill her already!” “Ugh, they had to make Iris the leader to be politically correct, ugh, she doesn’t deserve it!” “Rey is just a Mary Sue!”
Peter Parker didn’t deserve his powers. Barry Allen didn’t deserve his powers. Luke Skywalker didn’t deserve his powers.
No man or woman deserves or earns heroism. It’s a call from destiny that the character chooses whether or not to answer.
Sometimes the chosen one is a woman. How do people not get that?
Why Writers Shouldn't Listen to Fans
There is something so mystical and strange about entering an online space for a hobby/activity/fandom you know nothing about. It feels like I’m reading something I’m not supposed to, like I’m encroaching on some process I should not have been aware of. I do not know what any of these words mean. People are being emotional about something I have never known existed.
You know, I have been writing and posting fanfic for over 20 years (hush) and I still get nervous when I dip my toes into a new fandom. In the year of our goddess 2023 I am dipping my toes into Stranger Things/Steddie fic and geez the nerves are there - the 2 fics I've posted have been received well so that's always nice but goodness it's nervewracking
