Big Joel is a YouTube media / cultural criticism video essayist whom I've admired for some years, and something that had been lurking at the back of my mind finally fully occurred to me while watching one of his latest videos (analyzing Nick Fuentes). Joel has a sort of stammer which I don't think is at a clinical level or particularly abnormal, just a symptom of having mildly awkward verbal mannerisms (my autism-dar goes off quite loudly whenever I hear him speak). He has a tendency to repeat fragments of sentences in multiple attempts to form them fully. And what's now occurred to me is that he seems somewhat aware of this and intent on playing it up a bit for a certain ironic effect. This really hits home at the end of the video, when he's doing a satirical "Nick Fuentes Beatdown" where he appears to be voicing all of the fictional fantasy characters and, even though he clearly could have edited to make all of his dialog smooth, he includes a lot of hesitation and backtracking, half-contained bursts of laughter, and repeating of sentence fragments. It's a fun effect. You could almost describe the effect as making us feel like we're listening in on a kid playing a fantasy game with himself thinking nobody is listening, and I think that's more or less deliberate.
