Catching the tail end of #FantasyChallengeJuly, today's question asked me about my writing process. .  . As you can see by my set up, I am a music obsessive and absolutely deadly procrastinator. . I flick between jamming on spotify (Thank you Hamilton and Taylor) and searching youtube for lofi beats. (Particularly loved (@hankgreen's most recent lofi live stream).   . Otherwise I find myself tralling the internet for ideas on naming people and places for my #WIP.  . . My current work in progress is officially a "Fantasy Romance" but honestly it is a working "Romantic Tragedy" . .  . Today's #FantasyChallengeJuly is to write a 5 sentence short story! I'm not really sure if this is a story... but it's a thing 😄 The annals of history are littered with dust; the dusty tomes written by fallen men who are ashes on the wind, the gold dust of dead dynasties, drifting in the miasma of collapsed empires. The whole world is a collective of stardust, fragments of prostate and white dwarfs and red giants. When you take a breath, remember that the air you breathe is the molecules of millenniums gathered into your lungs. Editing brought me back to page one yesterday. I love when I have a little idea for a way to make something better and it plays out well. ❤️⁣ ⁣ Editing tip:⁣ Read your book, preferably aloud, and from the perspective of a reader instead of the writer. We all know what we need from a story when we are reading it, so read yours like it’s one you just pulled off the shelf.⁣ I find that when I do this I’m inspired to ask the right questions. ⁣ ⁣ “How does that make her feel?“⁣ "What is he doing with his hands?"⁣ "Are they still sitting down?"⁣ ⁣ This especially works for me as an underwriter because 75% of my editing is adding details haha. But I think it’s applicable to everyone. The questions it inspires you to ask will be different, but as long as your perspective is calling for you to ask them, it’s beneficial. ⁣ ⁣ Does that make any sense? Sooo... I got totally behind on the #FantasyChallengeJuly posts... but I HAD A GOOD REASON. @tanthologies , the fledgling publishing company I'm a partner with, released our first Anthology TODAY! Super excited but I was very busy talking shop and doing final proofreads and all that other good stuff. But now that our book baby has been born, I'm back and I stole a page from @skyehorn_author 's book. Today's challenge was to describe your tone. Rather than chatter about it, I made an Aesthetic for 'The Last Dreamer.' Book 2 of my Ethereal Realms series is a bit darker than #TWWD. Pretty much all of the characters start out in a pretty wretched place. Today is going to be a combination of both Day 7 and 8 for #FantasyChallengeJuly because l can't keep a schedule haha. [SWIPE>>>] DAY 7- What are the best/worst fantasy tropes? Personally, I love me a good quest with a quirky cast of characters. There is so much room to play! And the personality types clashing together make for some interesting drama! The worst fantasy trope isn't necessarily bad, just used way too often. For me, its the whole good vs. evil dynamic. If the characters are right and happen to be very well written then it is easy to get lost in the tale and not worry about the same old black and white trope being told over and over. You got a chosen one in your story? Oh, the chosen one is a pig with magical hooves who loves bacon? Cool. Got any more of that dark lord? Whoa! The dude loves to paint his fingernails and is really just looking for love? Strange. Let's keep reading. It doesn't necessarily have to be so wild and random, but playing on the old trope of good vs. evil in weird ways does help to make the story more interesting. I personally love morally ambiguous villains, the type that could be the heroes in their own stories/or in their own minds.
