With Halloween just around the corner, I thought it would be nice to start getting into the spirit a bit early. For those of you working on a gothic or fiction book, I wanted to share some themes and symbols to help bring that spooky, gothic, and dark vibe to your writing. 🦇

I think one of the most revealing questions you can ask a writer is:
"What part of your story came first?"
Not the title.
Not the genre.
Not even the plot.
The very first thing.
Was it a character?
A scene?
A line of dialogue?
A setting?
A random "what if" question?
It's always fascinating to me because two people can end up writing completely different books from ideas that started in almost the same way.
Writers, what was the very first piece of your current project to exist?
Red hot cherries
On a blazing fire
On a roof
Two men stand
They are wild
Young
Scared
One of them has everything but a gun
He cannot even wield it
He is too weak
A girl with a big heart
She waited
But nothing happened
So we left it.
~
The temptress
Ruins
The male mind
He knows he has statues
But nothing to wield them
He needs a counterpart
It will fall apart with her.
Before publishing, ask yourself:
Does the story make sense to someone reading it for the first time?
That's where beta readers help.
“The only end of writing is to enable readers better to enjoy life or better to endue it” (Samuel Johnson)
Every unforgettable novel, screenplay, or character started as a messy note in someone’s notebook. ✍️📓
A writer’s notebook isn’t just paper — it’s where plot twists are born, dialogue comes alive, and future bestsellers begin.
As a beta reader and book editor, I can tell you this: The writers who grow the fastest are the ones who capture ideas before they disappear.
Write the random scene. Save the strange dialogue. Keep the character idea. Your next masterpiece could be hiding in your notes.
What’s currently living inside your writer’s notebook? 👀
Before readers fall in love with your story… they judge it. Fast.
They won’t tell you why they stopped. They won’t explain what felt off. They’ll just close the book.
That’s where I come in.
I read like your future audience noticing weak openings, confusing scenes, slow pacing, and characters that don’t feel real yet… then I show you exactly how it affects the reading experience.
No sugarcoating. No discouraging either. Just clarity.
If you want your story to keep readers turning pages, send me a message and tell me what you’re writing.
