If y'all like Frankenstein and the Phantom of the Opera, or just gothic stuff the era in which they were written and set, I'd like to ruin you for the forseeable future by asking you to become interested in the comic Fantome-Stein (link to page 1 where I read it below), created by Beka Duke

It's been running for years, and it's soooo good, all gothic, with bones, death, grey morality, and pretty old-timey things, and of course, Frankenstein and Phantom of the Opera combined into one universe. It's beautiful and heartfelt and stressful and I just love it so much.

Be warned, we are like, five chapters in, and the creator unfortunately has had years-long hiatus in the past (last post, as of when I am making this post, was November of 2024) but I swear to you, the enjoyment is worth it.

Bride of Frankenstein

So there's another movie about Frankenstein's monster and the bride coming out, which got me thinking, and I decided to discuss the various portrayals of the relationship.

Children/family media

Frankenstein and his bride seem to be unliving happily ever after - or at least they're together

Hotel Transylvania - married

Mad Monster Party* - married

Mad Mad Mad Monsters - getting married

Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf - married

Most costuming and Halloween materials portray the monster and his bride together

Exceptions:

Duck Dodgers, Season 2, Episode 10.5 - Duck Dodgers not only creates a monster, but also a beautiful bride, who immediately leaves.

Casper's Scare School (the original 2006 special) - the monster is a gym teacher who accidentally brings up the failure of his marriage while making a speech to the students (she ran away with his doctor)

Teen+ Media

Frankenstein, the novel - they never even met

Creature Commandos - one-sided mortal enemies

The Bride of Frankenstein (original 1935 movie) - horror, abject horror and disappointment and then they both die

Carol Burnett's sketch The Bride of Frankenstein - she likes him, but he rejects her in favor of Frankenstein's** lab assistant, whom is definitely not willing

Fantome-stein, the comic - the Creature (Erik) tried to have a bride made, then tries to convince a living young lady to be his companion

In summary

I'm not sure that I've ever seen a piece of media made for older audiences that included Frankenstein's monster and his bride being together at all. However, I acknowledge that I haven't seen most of the movies made about this star-crossed romance.

Fantome-Stein

Okay, so I was watching this Lindsay Ellis video about how the Daroga (or the Persian if you’re basic) is the most underrated and least acknowledged character in The Phantom of the Opera.  Well, out of curiosity while I was waiting on an unskippable ad to finish, I forayed into the comment section.  There, I discovered something.

In the video, Lindsay mentions a book by Susan Kay simply titled Phantom, which is basically the original book but from Erik’s perspective.  One of the comments used this as a jumping-off point and enlightened those who bothered to read this comment as to the existence of a certain webcomic called...

Fantome-Stein.  

I was immediately intrigued.  I had to google it.  Basically, the premise is that everyone’s favorite opera ghost is none other than Frankenstein’s monster.  So you bet I had to read it.

People, this is just out there.  On the Internet.  For free.

At first, I thought this was going to be an affair similar to The Glass Scientists, but oh.

I was wrong.

This is no Glass Scientists.

It’s something more.  You can see it in the artstyle, look:

As I said, hardly anything like The Glass Scientists.  

I suppose the only thing Fantome-Stein does that is similar to TGS is diversifying and possibly de-aging the cast a bit, as Raoul appears to be biracial and much younger than his original book counterpart.

But seriously, go take a look, it’s incredible so far.  So gritty and gothic, but with its funny bits.

Also Christine has a lot more agency in this story, which is something we like to see.
