its the same as homie. its somewhat regional. its originated in louisiana, so you might hear it in neighboring states like mississippi, especially near the delta (which is where my folks from).

On a more serious note, I'm a firm believer that it doesn't take much to be kind and that people deserve to be treated with humanity. We don't have enough of that, and as I've grown older, I realize life is too short to spend time with people who don't eagerly welcome you and don't treat you like you deserve to be safe and happy.
