Fargo 2.09 "The Castle"
FARGO SEASON 2 SPOILERS
THE UFO
I love it. It is not to be reconciled. Beyond being a stellar symbol for 70s-era paranoia and conspiracy, Noah Hawley, the creator of ‘Fargo’, said “The world of ‘Fargo’ needs those elements; those random, odd, truth-is-stranger-than-fiction elements.” And the condensation dripping from it, ugh so cool.
Rye sees it in episode 1. Then you forget about it completely. I think it also shows up another couple times, like over downtown Luverne or over Hanzee or something. Then you forget it again. Then, at the motel…
In the motel parking lot occurs consuming, real, relentless violence. Probably like 15 people just died gruesome, shocking deaths but a flying saucer is dripping condensation all over us and blinding us. Look at us bleeding out in this motel parking lot. Absurd (Camus).
It forces us to zoom out, and it’s stupefying but then you forget it. Because who cares? Rye just shot 3 people, or Bear’s got his hands around Lou’s neck and Hanzee has an assault rifle trained on the Blumquists, etc. Here we go again.
One of my favorite my favorite plot/symbolic devices in film or tv ever. I love that we don’t see any aliens. The blue light in the dark night sky is also so distinct from the rest of the season’s 70s coloring. I also like that it could just be absurd in its own right. So many ways to interpret it. In any event, I do not think it is to be reconciled. So cool
