thrilling news
A cartoon from The Far Side® comic strip by Gary Larson from Thursday, January 8, 2026 | Transcript:
Ok, maybe I’m overthinking this but this farside comic of octopuses shows them both having less than eight arms. The (presumably) female has 6 (hexapus?) and the male (?) has 5 (pentapus?). I was getting fixated on calling them the appropriate arm number variation nane when I remembered that male octopuses have an arm they can wrench off that is their penis equivalent. (Hectocotylus)
So unless they are both missing many arms, I’m going wik they are both hexapuses and he’s been getting more than just the sucker hickies.
Was any of this necessary, informative, funny, worth a damn thing? Probably not but I needed it outta my freaking head.
@urgentkettle (marine animal shenanigans related)
It is extremely funny to me that the infamous Farside bit Cow Tools is referenced in the “See Also” section of the Wikipedia page on tool use in animals
“Attempted to parody” is so brutal 🤣
Important Locations: Merrymore
Merrymore is a bustling settlement teeming with artists of all different trades. Jugglers, painters, singers, and other artists live in a state of constant creation. Merrymore is fueled by their creative energy, but it's far from a happy place. Everyone is tired, putting on a facade, but ultimately they are unable to stop their work for fear of the settlement being destroyed. Merrymore is run by a half-dwarf named Merivus, who is a cheerful fellow with lots and LOTS of clones.
Merrymore rests at the foothills of a large mountain. Atop it sits a temple, and within the temple rests a crystal. Inside that pink, column-like crystal is a man, imprisoned. That man is named Thunder Wizard, and he was split apart into various other wizards (all music themed) and scattered across the multiverse. The entire plot of Farside revolved around collecting these various wizards.
The first time the party encountered the mountain, they were led up by a local guide. The trek was brutal and ended in a difficult fight with a solar yeti (DM Orange's custom creation). They managed to climb up to the mountain, only to be led down a set of hidden stairs by Merivus at the end, making the entire struggle feel pointless (in character. Ooc it was hilarious). The second time the party dared enter Merrymore was to bring Country Wizard back to the crystal. Merivus kindly set up a ski lift to help us get up the mountain, but it was broken. So Y.E.E.T.U.S. (our robotic healer who lost control of himself and died at the hands of Kage during an intense boss fight with his creator) flew us up the mountain to avoid the headache of climbing the damn thing again. The third time the party visited Merrymore was during the Arkworlds/Farside crossover special, which ended with Merrymore being completely leveled, including the accursed mountain.
Guys they made me fight The Beach Boys.
