He glances over in her direction when he thinks she's not looking. Artemis currently has her hands full just like him, head down and face screwed up with concentration as she nimbly screws together the piece he's asked her to handle while he takes care of the wiring. There's a sharp clatter of metal as she drops something - a screwdriver, onto the floor but she's quick to snatch it up again, muttering an apology under her breath.
Before the sounds would have set his teeth on edge, had him scream at her for being so clumsy but instead Edward stays calm, watching her with something that almost borders on fondness. He only stops to look back what he's doing when the tool in his hand starts hissing, forcing him to continue soldering.
He frowns. It's almost funny how his perception on somebody could had changed as much and as fast as it had with Artemis Crock. Before he'd been irritated at the mere sight of the woman, how she could not even seem to guess the answer to his easiest riddles. He'd thought her a simpleton, a moron he could wrap around his finger then toss away like a used bandaid once she'd outlived her purpose.
Except... that hadn't happened, or at least hadn't turned out like how he thought it would.
His face scrunches up as he works. He'd planned on it after taking Crock in. Thought of nothing else when caring for her and she'd been obnoxious some more but as time went on, he started seeing things he hadn't before, little glimpses she'd hidden and were very different from his initial first impression of her.
He looks her away again. She's still working diligently, even striking up a conversation about archeology. Something about ancient traps and how their designs, still so very intricate, hadn't changed all that much from their modern equivalents other than the materials used today. It's hard not to hang onto her every word and again Edward is struck by how differently he sees her now, pretending like she didn't know answers to whatever riddle he had and yet here she was, spouting off facts even he hadn't known until now.
There's an odd flutter in his chest and Edward isn't sure he likes it. He pretends to busy his hands but Artemis seems to notice how distracted he is suddenly, offering to grab him an energy drink from upstairs. She's getting one too and he nods, trying not to stare as she goes to grab them.
It was undeniable now. Edward cared for her one some strange level, cared for her in ways he'd never really cared about anyone before. Artemis was brash, painfully so, not to mention earnest to a fault. She was reckless in every conceivable way, vexing him on levels he'd never believed possible, never hesitating to prod or poke him if it brought her some sick satisfaction but she could be thoughtful too, soft despite her fierce exterior.
She'd been... good to him, good in ways he'd never experienced with anyone before and for a moment it almost frightens Edward to imagine something happening to her, that one day he'd wake up and never see her again and -
That train of thought is thankfully derailed upon her return. She's back, not just with a drink but a snack too, one of the apricot and nut bars he likes so much. She even has fresh bandaids for the scrapes he'd gotten getting elbow deep in the tangle of wires and steel he's under and again there's an uncomfortable knot in his stomach at how easily he thought about discarding her previously, that once she'd meant so little to him.
They get back to work but if anything Edward's even more distracted than before. He had feelings for Artemis. Christ, they'd had sex but did he truly care about her or did he just like what she could do for him? His fingers hesitate, and suddenly Edward is quite terrified whatever the answer is.
