Head cannons on traditional Lombax clothing
(This is clothing trends made before space exploration and was still worn in any small town, settlement, and basically any place that isn't a big city)
So I haven't really taken part in the fandom in any big part in a while, so here are some of my head cannons for traditional clothes for Fastoon. This features men and androgynous people just because that's what I drew in a hour or so while sketching.
1- Fastoon's primary fabric is silk as the moths that produce it live and mate amongst the wheat-like plants that are the world's largest agricultural product. While there are cotton-like fabrics, silk is the most breathable and comfortable in the desert heat, and do not damage the fur, allowing for a softer, healthier coat.
2- The silk's value is not based on the availability of is as it is plentiful, but by it's colours. In a world where plants for dying textiles are rare and better used in culinary and medicinal fields, there are three divisions of cloth. One being common, which is any silk that is white or soft/ pastel in colour, as the moth's silk colour is determined by the species of wheat it consumes. Two being fancy, which is any cloth with deep hues, with black being the least expensive and purple being the most. These fabrics use dyes from plants, chemicals, and animals and are expensive. Three being extravagant is often deep dyed cloth embroidered with patterns which differ depending on the tribe. These are usually handmade, treasured items given to people from family or for special events. You can buy them, but if you have the money to do so, having too many is considered distasteful and tacky.
3- Sewing is limited and used sparingly. Where gathers or hems are needed, pleats are used and covered with fancy silk scarves, which are unisex and also used as cloaks or headscarves during the windy season and during the night. Lombaxes favour buttons and singular cuts with only a single hem or two over multi-piece sewn items. Draping and gathering with the use of clasps is common, and many people will only have a few sewn garments. Men wear long kilts, women wear wraps and sari like dresses.
4- Buttons are preferred over zippers, and as Fastoon is a metal rich planet, not having jewelry is considered naked more than actually being nude is.
5- Long shawls are used to show a position of note. They are sewn to fit the shoulders and leave the chest open to give a cape like appearance while allowing the wearer to display their outfit. They serve fashion over purpose. A common person would just drape a scarf around themselves, wear a normal shawl, or in the rare occasion wear a knitted sweater.
6- Shoes are not commonly worn unless needed to protect your feet on work that leads you outside the city. The exception is the rainy season, when the desert floods. Shoes are made of silk with a leather bottom and plush stuffed sole because if you're going to be forced to wear them, they should be comfortable (Even the best-made ones are considered uncomfortable to a people who tend to go bear foot)
7- Clothing is genderless and is made to fit one's lifestyle and occupation.
8- Sewn garments to not have rigid waistlines and use pleating. One's clothing is meant to be worn through out the seasons of life, which means weight gain and loss. A person can wear the same pants they wore when they were 19 when they are 31 and 8 months pregnant.
9- Fast fashion is reviled. You do not waste resources like that. You wear your clothes for as long as possible and take care of them to the best of your ability. If you damage or stain yours often, you are looked down upon. When they can no longer be worn, they are taken to a tailor or cobbler or bag maker or what have you to be repurpoused.
10- Each tribe has different styles to fit their lives, but by the ancient world, all tribes lived together and nomadic and isolated tribes were rare. A plains tibe member could wear a seaman's kilt, and a night walker could wear a nomads coat. (I can write more about the tribes if anyone is interested)
Thats all I can think of right now, I will get around to feminine clothing at some other time if there's interest.
