Don't know if anyone has mentioned Dogpatch in Naperville. They have kittens, at times littermates. Also Anderson in South Elgin.
Unfortunately, without a car Naperville and Elgin are a bit far to go. Still, at least I’m lucky, there are plenty of rescues in the city I can go to.

A friend foster-failed through Paws Chicago. She’d 10/10 recommend
Yeah, I’ll probably go through Paws -- they’re easy to get to and they have special deals for hard-to-adopt pets.

OMG. THAT DOG IS FUCKING PRECIOUS.
He looks very sweet. I’m torn, because on the one hand I made a deal with myself -- if he’s still free when I’m ready, I’ll look into adopting him, but if he’s not I will look strictly at cats. On the other hand I really would like to see him find a forever home, so I don’t WANT to hope he’ll still be free when I’m ready. And I’m still a little leery, dogs require a lot more active attention than cats and are way more expensive in terms of having to board them when you travel, which I do a lot of.

I think you should take the basic idea and color scheme and change the details.
That was my thought -- I’m always on the lookout for cheap ukes at yard sales and thrift stores, and if I find another $5 uke like my last one, I’ll paint it dark and add gold accents.
