Carter Grant and Kara

This is. The most precious. Friendship.

Everyone remembers the ep in S1 where Cat essentially put the kaibosh on future babysitting. But.

Carter still visits CatCo. Kara’s allowed to get him food and chat. One day she helps him with his science homework when he asks. Like, really helps him. Gets him into it and helps him learn what he needs to know and more. (Obviously his mother helps him with anything English related already)

Carter won’t stop smiling that night while he spews facts about planets.

Cat slots aside time in Kara’s schedule to tutor Carter. Kara doesn’t mention it except for an extra large grin twice a week when she knows Carter is coming.

On one of said tutoring days, Cat needs Kara to run out and grab something and she happens to be in the middle of tutoring Carter. Cat waves her hand like whatever. “Just take Carter with you, I’m sure he can do with a break.”

Carter’s smile is so big Cat lets it happen once a week from then on. She casually mentions to Kara in a way that is clearly not at all casual that she would like Carter to see that new science movie but doesn’t have time to take him, would Kara mind? (Kara most definitely would not mind) “and here’s some money, he loves that diner down the street from the theatre but I refuse to eat one more of their cheap milkshakes so I’m delegating this particular task to you.” She levels Kara with a terrifying glare. “Don’t make me regret this.”

Carter beams for a week and spews more science facts than Cat ever wanted to know. He catches her being up too late reading science articles so she can spew facts right back at him and Carter hugs his mom tighter than she thinks anyone (except perhaps Kara) has ever hugged anyone in the history of the world and she subtly gives Kara an easy workweek in thanks

And from there, it’s little things. Kara’s always watching, always careful. Careful both with his physical safety and to pick up hints of what Cat thinks he needs from a non-parental figure in his life that week.

She and Winn use Cat’s office to make a giant gaming room again while Cat is in a meeting at another building, and they barely turn it back in time, the three of them whistling suspiciously in classic nothing-to-see-here manner.

Cat of course knows exactly what happened, but she sees both Winn and Kara wink at Carter and simply says, “I certainly hope you didn’t all miss me too terribly while I was gone,” And Carter beams and crashes into her with a hug and says in the most dramatic voice she’s ever heard him use that he missed her ever so and Cat can’t breathe,, he’s never been so self-confident in front of others before and Kara is giggling as she and Winn high-five and if Cat brings her and Winn an “extra” dozen sticky buns the next day no one needs to know

Cat is furious when Carter shows up one day with a split bloody lip and nearly bites Kara’s head off when she informs Cat she has a board meeting, but Kara looks at her meaningfully and Cat sighs and promises it’ll be short.

When she gets back, Kara has Carter laughing. He’s got a milkshake and his eyes are bright. He tells Cat that night Kara told him about being bullied in school but how she got through it, and how she offered to have her sister teach him some self-defense. “I don’t want to solve problems through violence, but I don’t want to be afraid,” he tells her, eyes huge. “I know I can’t use my words as well if my mouth gets broken. Do you think I could?”

“Well, when you put it like that,” Cat sighs. She tries to pay Alex for her troubles but the older Danvers (who she’d never met before this point) just laughs. “I’m honored to help anyone who needs it. He’s a quick learner, he won’t have any trouble keeping himself safe. Let me know if you ever need the lessons too, Ms. Grant.” And she’s gone in a swirl of leather and confidence, leaving Cat to stare as Carter punches at Kara’s outstretched hands with a grin

Cat has a late night meeting and this time doesn’t hesitate when Kara offers to take Carter at their game night. Carter crushes everyone at just about everything, and he’s still gushing to his mom about how he and Kara made the best Pictionary team there ever was nearly a month later.

Cat lets Kara do whatever she asks with Carter after that. He opens up to people more when she’s around. James teaches him some basic principles of photography and Cat hangs one of his photos in the entryway. Winn teaches him how to fix any gaming system glitch and sends him new cheat codes every week.

And Kara, Kara’s there for it all, until Cat’s son is the protege of her protege, and Cat watches Kara watch over his every step with pride and joy and a little wistfulness in her eye, and she remembers the vaguest story she swears she heard somewhere about Kara being supposed to care for a little boy but she never got the chance to...
