Sastiel Love Week - Day 7 - Adoption
At first Sam had no idea where Cas was taking him. He’d kept it completely quiet, not even Dean could answer Sam’s questions.
They’d been driving at least twenty minutes, and the blindfold on Sam’s face was starting to itch.
“Come on, Cas. Can’t I know now?” He begged again.
“No Sam, that would remove the surprise element that is required of a surprise.”
Sam sighed heavily and nodded. “Right, of course it would.” He slumped back in the seat and tilted his head toward the open window.
Finally, Cas stopped the car. “You may remove the blindfold, Sam.”
Sam yanked the blindfold off nearly before the words were out of Cas’ mouth. His eyes landed on the name of the building in front of them: Smith County Animal Shelter. He looked over at Cas, clearly confused.
“What’re we doing here, Cas?”
“This is the place that people come to adopt animals, isn’t it? It’s where Dean told me to go.”
“Dean? My Dean? Told you to take me to an animal shelter? Dean who hates animals.”
“I don’t know that he hates animals, per say–”
“He sure doesn’t like them,” Sam mumbled. Cas smiled softly.
“Come on.”
“Where?”
“Inside,” Cas said, getting out, “To pick out your birthday present.”
Sam scowled as he got out of the car. “My birthday present?”
“It is your birthday tomorrow, isn’t it?” Cas asked, crossing his arms.
“Well, yeah, but–”
“And you do still want a dog, do you not?”
“But Dean–”
“Told me you would prefer to pick it out yourself, and not to let you get anything smaller than thirty pounds.”
Sam gaped, shocked at what he was hearing. He looked from the shelter doors back to Cas, waiting for the punchline. When none came, he beamed and grabbed Cas’ arm. “Come on then, let’s go look,” He said excitedly.
After nearly two hours of searching, Sam finally settled on a golden retriever – german shepherd cross with the name of Lilo. She was young, only about a year old, and had an energy level through the roof. She was the perfect dog for Sam.
Cas spoke to the adoption woman, laughing and charming her despite his social oddities, and they walked out of the center with a new family member.
It took Dean a few weeks to warm up to the fluffy dog, especially when Lilo had a tendency to steal food off plates and chew on shoes, but she even won over the grumpy older Winchester.
Cas fell for her immediately, staying at the bunker to care for her while the brothers were on hunts. He and Sam took her for mile long walks every morning and evening, laughing and getting breakfast, despite Dean’s mutters that their bunker was big enough for the dog to get exercise without them killing themselves.
Lilo was an amazing dog, and an excellent first child. Over the years of Sam and Cas’ relationship, they gained more animals, deciding that a human child simply wasn’t plausible considering their hunting lifestyle and Cas’ immortality – but that didn’t stop them from filling the bunker with dogs and cats, once Cas and Sam discovered a spell to cure Dean of his allergies.
And it all started with one goofy dog for a Winchester’s birthday.
Ahaha! Final day! I hope you enjoyed it! I’m a sucker for giving Sam a dog, and if Cas can be the one to do it, even better. I hope you enjoyed this and all the others that I gave you this week! Have a good next week and rest of the month!
