         Louisa should have known better than to show up at this wedding. She had work to do, and right now she’d much rather be yelling at clients or colleagues than pouring champagne into herself as if there was no tomorrow. Skin tight dress hugging her frame, she felt a little like a pig waiting for slaughter -- and in a way, she was. It wasn’t a big wedding, so it was only a matter of time until her ex would lay eyes on her. She’d done so the moment she walked in, which was why she fled towards the open bar. If she had to talk to her ex, she might as well do so while drunk, even if she preferred to not do it at all.

           She was already going through excuses in her head she could use to get out of this, but before she had a chance to find the bridge and say any of them, goosebumps rose on her skin when an arm brushed against hers. “I’m sorry--”, she started and quickly stepped aside to make space for the newly arrived person. Except when she glanced up, her eyes connected with a quite familiar pair, guts churning at the sight of the face she still wanted to kiss so very badly. “Oh. It’s you.”

        Mateo had noticed her presence before he even turned around to see her. Ever since a very particular night in a coat closet at a party about two weeks ago, he was hyperaware of her every move, and the beautiful aura that seemed to follow her wherever she went. Sometimes, a memory of the smell of her shampoo hit him, or the way her skin felt underneath his fingertips as alcohol pushed them to kiss with more and more passion in the darkness between the coats. There was just a tiny problem, and that was the idiot he had to call his best friend because they stuck through thick and thin since their high school days. Mateo would never claim the man was a good man, and he’d always felt bad for the girls who had to stick with him. But this particular woman struck a nerve, and Mateo wished he could tell her to just turn her back on his best friend, and come to him instead. As if his arms were already wide open, just waiting for her.

         The faint sound of music was buzzing from downstairs, but up here it was awfully quiet. He’d fled the life of the party in an attempt to catch a breath, before he did something stupid at the sight of her dancing with his friend. And yet here she was, beautiful as ever when he turned around to look at her instead of out the window. A crooked smile on his lips, he folded his arms over his chest. “Or did you get lost?”
