ok another question: do you have any headcanons about possible discendants of Haleth & Caranthir?
I do not have precise headcanons, in the sense that I don’t have OCs ready for the purpose. but when I do consider the possibility, I tend to default to the idea that, in a scenario in which Haleth is pregnant, she leaves before Caranthir is aware of it.
they’d be born mortal, since I recall the choice of the peredhil pertains that specific bloodline only, and now I’m left to headcanon why Haleth is said to die heirless, leaving the leadership of her House to her brother’s line. you could say that she kept a pregnancy from an elf secret. you could also try to make a case that her child is a woman, but it would be very strange for the House of Haleth to deny inheritance of leadership to a woman.
so now that I’m thinking about it, there’s also option two, the child of Haleth happens, but before she leaves Caranthir’s lands, and this child stays with him. being born mortal and due to the absence of the mother and a properly recognised Eldarin marriage, the child goes unrecorded. Haleth can now die heirless. at this point, whatever happens to this line might follow the lines of canon: perhaps eventually leaving the eastern lands and joining their mortal kin in Brethil, until Túrin happens, and then Húrin happens, and the house falls to civil war.
whichever option, it may be that these descendants are among those who are driven away by the civil war (rather than killed, presuming they know their lineage), or perhaps they remain among the women and children who still dwell in the forest and eventually flee to the Mouths of Sirion. afterwards, some might go to Númenor and some might leave for eastern lands beyond the mountains.
I am definitely partial to unknowning or unrecorded descendants populating the area of Rhûn and other ancestral lands of the Edain & Drúedain
sorry if i jump on your blog but the version in which Daeron is Luthien's brother is in the Lost Tales. don't worry if you don't know it because it's pretty wild and it can be confusing sometimes ( let me just say that: TEVILDO ). I admit I'm always weirded out by this version because theorically Daeron here is a magical half-divine being like his sister but he does nothing of it ??????
So... we get Tevildo AND Daeron as Luthien’s brother in the SAME work?? Like, the Prince of Cats AND weird genealogical stuff that leaves us with a magical half-divine prince that doesn’t even DO anything??? I LOVE IT.
Ngl but now I’m honestly, unironically wishing there was some version of Luthien’s story that kept Daeron as her weirdly useless sibling but still had him do all the scorned lover stuff... just in a brotherly way. Can you imagine? Tattling to Thingol because he thinks his sis has shit taste in men? Getting miserably lost while searching for her despite being the son of a literal minor goddess and super powerful magical queen? Not singing about his lost love for the rest of his days but rather alternating between “sorry Lu, guess I’ve been a jerk” songs and “anyway this is all your fault for being so fucking reckless and having shit taste in men, also you almost gave dad a heart attack” songs? And, unrelated to all that but, being not only one of the greatest musicians in Middle Earth and inventing your own set of runes but ALSO being a magical half-divine prince in your own right... yet no one cares because they’re all too busy talking about Luthien’s tragic epic star-crossed love story and daring Silmaril quest and whichever terrifying magical being she’s aggressively singing at this week??
I don’t even know WHY I find the idea so hilarious but I’m cackling. I think I’m gonna look for fics about that.
Sofia a question. do you think that Demeter used girl power in provoking a famine after Persephone's kidnapping, in which milionth of people died by starving, or she was an Abusive Overbearing Parent that must be bashed by us?
the question is indeed very complex and multilayered one. i think she started out as an Abusive Overbearing Parent but, as it often happens with ppl who today would be otherwise diagnosed with wandering womb syndrome, thanks to her hysteria she unlocked her inner Girl Boss when persephone was kindapped!
hi !!! sorry if i jump on your blog but speaking of LOTR-esque fantasy series with a new take on the legendarium, I think you may be interested in the duology The Sundering by Jacqueline Carey? (the titles of the two volumes are Banewreaker and Godslayer ). it's a retelling of LOTR from the pov of the 'bad guys', the protagonist is basically the Witch King of Angmar and the character who gives the name to the saga is a mixture between Melkor and Sauron!
Ooooo, I think I've seen you mention this before on your blog. This sounds really interesting. I'd love to read something from the point of view of these kinds of characters! I'll have to check it out when I get a chance
i'm so glad we share the same opinion on 'Feanor and Fingolfin are a hot ship and they've potential but I just hate when it's presented like 'Feanor never loved Nerdanel/ Nolo never loved Anaire' , so it's cool share this opinion
YEAH that’s one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to this ship!! if they don’t care about their wives, just each other, that not only reduces nerdanel and anaire’s characters but also completely overwrites the dynamic i’m interested in. like i wanna write/read about the conflict and the antagonism and the grudging development of respect! if you’re gonna take away the rivalry what’s the point??
anyway: here’s a snippet from my au (set immediately after the snippet from this post) where nolo’s missing his wife [incest cw if that wasn’t already obvious]
He barely noticed when Fëanáro’s crying abated, for now it was he that shook, vision blurred with tears. Oh, what was wrong with him, what had led him to this place? What sick and twisted being was he, to need his own brother, flesh of his father’s flesh, the way he did? Why had he sworn to follow Fëanáro into this madness, this realm of death and blood and fire? His hands were discolored from the ice, and snowfall filled him with unspeakable dread—and yet here he was, holding the nér who had abandoned him to the Grinding Ice close to his chest.
What had possessed him to swear the Oath that bound them together, severing all his other ties, brewing a storm within his chest and worse, his loins? Anairë, o beautiful, holy, wondrous Anairë—he had left her, for this, for his brother, replaced her with Fëanáro in every way, and he could never have her back, not even when the war was won and Finwë avenged and Fëanáro’s Oath fulfilled, because his would not be, not so long as Fëanáro drew breath, and Ñolofinwë knew in his gut that even death would not free him from this damned and damning love that threatened to destroy him—
Fëanáro kissed him, soft and sweet, like he never had before, and took his breath away. His mind stopped spinning, his fëa brushed against Fëanáro’s and caught his spark, burning deep inside him, and the withered, frozen thing that was his marriage bond shriveled even more.
i am going nuts with Oaths and Bonds in this fic lmao
it's with immense sadness that I've to inform the anons in your inbox that Cesira doesn't exist and she's not going to thank them for their obsessive stanning <3
I have a feeling they still haven’t grasped the point where it’s all fake and they should learn to take things a bit less seriously
your tags about Joker. thank you for being one of the reasonable people on this hellsite ( nice to notice how they saw a movie about classism and they can only think about 'urr durr this other movie is better because showing mentally ill people not being nice TM is bad!!!!")
You're welcome, dear! I love being called "reasonable" because that's not a way I'm often described IRL lol, but this site is like a parallel universe. As for the movie, personally I loved it. As a person who lives with multiple debilitating mental illnesses, I related to the protagonist to an uncomfortable level. It was a punch in the guts, really. And yes, the movie is about ableism and classism, and I don't get how the latter flew over some people's heads...? It was not the central theme and of course it's not Parasite either (I don't even think it was *intentionally* anti-capitalist or something) but it was there.
The movie itself is not a masterpiece, but it's still good and extremely well-acted. It's also a character study of the Joker - I could go on and on about how in the end the audience doesn't even know what was real and what wasn't, and how Arthur being an Unreliable Narrator Extraordinaire is pivotal to any Joker origin story, but I won't, for all of your sakes lol. Also, I know marginalized people who belongs to different kinds of minorities who loved the movie for the same reasons I did, so it's not just a White Man™ thing.
Last but not least: a comics movie (like Logan and Joker are) won't teach men to be or not be toxic. Toxic masculinity and sexism have been a thing since the dawn of ages, well before books and cinema and any other kind of media were invented. (I don't even want to talk about those Progressive People™ who were 🤡🤡 about how the movie was going to be the birth of the Incel Antichrist... They sounded like any average reactionary who believes school-shootings happen because of violent videogames. Ugh.) Also... we need both kind of stories: heroes who are able to Overcome Their Trauma and Become Better Persons, and villains who don't. They are not mutually exclusive concepts. And this goes for female characters as well! *Especially* female characters. We need more fictional women who go through an actual redemption arc, and others who are Chaotic and Unhinged and always will be. (Tumblr loves them anyway, because apparently *they* are not problematic... as if they were less dangerous than their male counterparts, which is a sexist bias IMHO.)
Mentall illness is not just a Woke Point you (general you) can use on Tumblr dot com to win some Discourse. It's a very, very difficult reality for the people who suffer from it, with a lot of Bad Symptoms. I myself have *never* been violent/aggressive in my life (it's actually the opposite; I feel guilty at killing *spiders*, go figure lol), but I've shown a lot of Bad Symptoms that drew people away from me. And for a reason; I'm not a easy person to deal with. I tend to isolate myself, and in my worst moments I don't care about hygiene, I snap at people, I (a usually quiet and sober person) lash out badly, I break down, etc. So *personally* I feel inspired by stories where people with trauma and mental illness thrive and stuff, but on a primal level I also need and relate to stories where characters just Snap. It's not even a power fantasy for me, it's cathartic in an Aristotelian sense.
And Joker (the movie) is not the usual "Some Bad People Hurt Me So I'll Become A Nightmare" woobie villain origin story, the issues are *systematic*. It's a whole system that doesn't care about Arthur and people like him... who indeed are rioting in the streets at the end of the movie. (Which is ironic because Joker as a character doesn't believe in anything, he's a narcissist who's always about Me Me Me and has a pathological need for attention, stemmed from how invisible he used to be pre-clown makeover).
