That cannon was for Josh. It just had to be. Birdie was on the castle stairway, on her way back to Feather and Pauline when she heard it; and, although she'd been impatiently waiting for the sound, her heart still skipped a beat when it occurred. She'd done. Her reason for coming here was done- proven. All that remained now was to win.... and then face all of Panem and the many questions about how and why she'd killed her only sibling, deceiving him until the very end and proving herself to be the truly insane, evil sister he'd once painted her as. Pausing to catch her breath, she leaded against the wall and tried to picture Josh's bedroom at home. All of the instruments that would never annoy her again. The mess that could be cleaned out and thrown away and forgotten about just as easily as Josh himself.
Straightening herself as she continued to the door of Pauline's chamber, Birdie even allowed herself a smile. It wasn't over yet but she was allowed to enjoy this victory. She pushed the door open without hesitance and grinned at the sight of her dragon. "I'm back," she announced, speaking sweetly to her new weapon of choice rather than her accomplice. Feather was on the dragon's back now, leaning over her neck and whispering something. Birdie dismissed that concern as Feather's slight insanity. The ex-Career was hurt and emotionally unstable but she didn't seem like much of a threat. And, as much fun as the two of them might have had together, Feather had to die, along with Talon and Sparta and... Birdie shut her eyes for a brief, pained moment at the thought: Lyra.
"Where's Sparta?" She demanded, finally addressing Feather. The girl said nothing at first. Her eyes looked Birdie up and down and there was a hint of unease in her expression. Birdie narrowed her eyes in a silent order for her to hurry up and answer. "She didn't say," Feather whispered finally, speaking cryptically and just loud enough for Birdie to hear. Well, that was interesting. Sparta could have gone virtually anywhere in the arena. Birdie liked to think she'd gone after Talon, now that she had the advantage of him assuming she was still dying. "Whatever," she said, dismissing that thought with a shrug. Motioning for Feather to come down, she gave another order: "Give me my necklace back."
She'd never expected immediate compliance. In fact, every time she allowed Feather or Sparta to hold the locket, there seemed to be an increased level of hesitance in giving it back. Pauline had grown used to having all three girls around her but she was still most likely to obey the one who held the gold chain. Naturally, they all felt safer with it around their own neck, but it belonged to Birdie. It had been a gift from her mother before Josh was born. She kept it now as a reminder that, in spite of how little she remembered from that time, she had once been a perfect only child and she would be again.
"Feather," she snapped as the girl remained in place, her arms wrapping around Pauline's neck and her lips moving faster than ever as she whispered into the dragon's ear. It was then that an eerie chill of dread rushed through Birdie. She resolved that, when she got the locket back, she would never lend it to Feather again. The alliance between them would have to break sooner or later anyway. She reached subconsciously for one of her throwing knives but, just as her hand closed around the weapon, Pauline opened her great mouth and spat out a burst of flame. Birdie was too stunned to move at first and that moment was all it took for the fire to engulf her. She crumpled to the ground, screaming with all the fury and regret she'd ever felt. Somewhere in her mind, she realized that she would still be able to move- at the very least to crawl away from the dragon's immediate range but her face had taken the worst of the assault.
She touched a hand to her head but she could already tell that most of her hair was gone and the skin beneath it was red. A warm liquid streamed over her forehead and down her nose and chin. In one horrified second, she recognized it as her own blood. Her eyes had been sealed shut as though the flesh of her eyelids had melted, leaving her burning eyes swollen and sightless. "No!" She screamed, rolling on the ground in a useless panic over the pile of golden coins she'd collapsed in. Even of the sound of her screaming, Birdie could hear movement. An enormous being had shifted and, although she couldn't see it, she knew it hovered over her body. She let out a final, desperate howl before it came down and crushed her into a lump of blood, bone and useless flesh. A thin crimson stream rushed over the golden treasures on the ground and Feather Glass affectionately stroked Pauline's scales. Staring at the door Birdie had left open, she leaned in and whispered another order for the dragon.
