This plant association is always a winner with the contrast of horizontal and vertical forms. The flat, pink starry flowers of Hylotelephium 'Herbstfreude' (sedum, stonecrop) deepen to brick red and finally brown seedheads. The strong vertical is provided by Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' (feather reed-grass). This clump-forming deciduous perennial grass is able to withstand high winds through the winter.

The strong horizontals of this planting combined with the changes in colour and texture provide winter interest. This is a large scale planting of the herbaceous perennial Hylotelephium (Herbstfreude Group) 'Herbstfreude' (stonecrop, sedum) and the ornamental grass Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' (feather reed-grass).

Here three different grasses become the stars of late summer and will continue to provide a dynamic display through the autumn and winter. The characteristics of the different species are clear when seen together with the upright habit of Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' (feather reed-grass), the airy heads of the Stipa gigantea 'Gold Fontaene' (golden oats), and the slender, arching, silvery plumes of Stipa pseudoichu.
