The large flower heads of Hylotelephium 'Herbstfreude' (stonecrop, sedum) start as waxy green buds exactly the same colour as the leaves, these then open to pink starry flowers which age to red, and finally as brown seedheads for the winter.

The ruby-red ray florets of Echinacea purpurea 'Rubinstern' (purple coneflower) spread horizontally from the brown central cone. This upright perennial is a reliable cultivar that thrives in a deep, well-drained, humus-rich soil in full sun although but they can tolerate some shade.

Here they are placed at the front of this border at the entrance to a rose garden. This is a robust herbaceous perennial that forms a low clump of coarse, hairy leaves, and usually becomes dormant, disappearing completely by late summer.

In this herbaceous border at Hampton Court Palace, Surrey, the Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' (sneezeweed) was flowering. This plant has nectar and pollen rich flowers that are popular with insects including bees, butterflies and moths, later there are seeds that attract bird species.
