This week I have seen the annual Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) flowering in gardens and in an urban setting by a major road. The flower colour is variable with shades of red, pink, mauve, purple, white and nearly black. The seed capsule enlarges after flowering making a decorative feature for the winter.

In the shelter of a warm, south-facing wall with free-draining gravel this Iris unguicularis 'Peloponnese Snow' (Algerian iris) was covered in delicate flowers. This evergreen, rhizomatous plant has purple flowers in the species so this cultivar is very distinctive.

Thriving in moist soil and shady woodland conditions that are part of their natural habitat are these Erythronium dens-canis (dog’s tooth violet). The common name reflects the shape of the bulb, which resembles a pointed dog’s tooth.

In the woodland garden of the Beth Chatto Garden, Essex, UK, the arching fronds of the fern Woodwardia fimbriata (giant chain fern) making a striking contrast to the emerging foliage and flowering bulbs. This evergreen fern can reach up to 1.5m tall with dark green fronds and requires a moist and sheltered site.
