It follows the life of Amir and we see how his relationship with his best friend and servant, Hassan, in Kabul from the 1960s onwards. We see how Amir battles to reach the beliefs of his father and how his need for his father’s admiration begins to taint the relationship between Amir and Hassan.
But, the infamous local kite fighting tournament changes both their lives forever and sets Amir on a completely new pathway of life.
Despite the fact that The Kite Runner is definitely not my prefered genre of literature as I tend to use reading as a way of escaping from the world and its problems, I knew that this was a book that I had to read. (Also didn’t hurt that my edition is gorgeous) I admit that I really don’t know a lot about the wars in Afghanistan and Afghanistan as a whole, so it was really cool to learn about a completely different culture and to see the early cultural melange of east and west, and it was absolutely heartbreaking to see how the war created the perception of the middle east that I have grown up with.
Nothing really, it’s a modern classic for a reason; the characters are complex and real and you can understand the reasons and motivations for their actions in a world that, over the span of 40 years has completely changed.
This is definitely a book that everyone needs to read.
