“ Hey do you want, chicken, steak or the vegan option for Jaina’s wedding reception?”
@1000voicesrising
upcoming preview!! can you guess who it is? me and my blabber mouth though you probably already know :p
also it’s in the tags hahahah
i might not be able to do the other drawing i had in mind because of some events happening (which requires a really fancy outfit lol), but that’ll just end up being pushed to next month’s issue so no worries, you’ll still be able to see it sooner or later :))
preface: i’m coming at this from a very non-binary and inclusive sort of perspective so here we go
i know it’s discourse but like... i think that the question of people being socialized male or female is (very nuanced) more a question of people being socialized to know people are listening to their voices and being socialized to be seen & not heard.
like really, when people say ‘socialized as a girl/woman’ what do they actually mean? i feel like that means, especially in my case, that the person in question was socialized to be meek and docile and quiet. and you can say that the socialization breaks down because if you’re not a woman then you’re not a woman and the cult of womanhood doesn’t apply, aka that any social conditioning is negated by the fact that you secretly know you’re not a woman so you know intrinsically that X characteristic or generalization doesn’t apply to you, but that A) doesn’t take into consideration the great number of non-binary people who experience some part of the spectrum of their assigned gender, and B) doesn’t take into consideration the fact that socialization is insidious as all hell.
like, we know aggressive behavior is masculine and meek behavior is feminine but when someone is pressuring you to be aggressive or meek or whatever they’re not always prefacing it with ‘be a man’ or ‘act like a woman’. there is so much nuance that goes into socialization that you probably don’t realize how much you’ve been socialized as your assigned gender. you probably don’t remember most of that socialization/conditioning at all because it probably happened before the age of five. it gets literally built into your psyche. and i guess the point i’m trying to make is that if you’re encouraged from a young age to speak up, to have your voice heard, you probably will. if you’re encouraged to keep quiet, to serve and not to speak, you probably will. the fact that one comes bundled with masculinity and the other femininity doesn’t matter, because at some point gender becomes gender roles becomes your role in society becomes who you are.
as a trans person i can say, with complete honesty, that my upbringing as a girl/woman changed me. it shaped how i perceive the world. there is no getting out of it. i can’t undo the fact that i was always subliminally told to be sleek and slender and forever twenty, told to watch my weight and watch my mouth, to keep my voice down. because even if i knew at the age of 12 that it didn’t apply to me (spoilers: i had no goddamn clue at the age of 12 that i was anything but cis), even if i knew at the age of FIVE that womanhood didn’t apply to me, even then, having so many voices and so many microaggressions focused in my direction would have socialized/conditioned/molded me to feel that way ANYWAY.
and maybe the issue is with the language. maybe people push back against the idea that they were socialized as male or female, a man or a woman, because it takes away some of their agency as trans people. it makes it impossible to transition, to pass as your true gender, if you’ve been molded the wrong way all your life. it makes it feel kind of futile, doesn’t it? it makes it feel as if the closet is your home because you were shaped to fit inside it. but honestly... accepting that you’ve been socialized as your assigned gender can be the first step towards rejecting it. i accept that i’m small and meek, that that’s how the world perceives me because that’s what they taught me to be--and every time i fight against it, i get a little rush of euphoria because I DO NOT HAVE TO BE WHAT THEY MADE ME. i do not have to be sleek and slender and the perfect woman. this life is mine, and i’m going to do what i want with it.

(Surat Ulang Tahun) Buat Mama
Aku punya cerita.
Tentang satu orang wanita ciptaan-Nya.
Kata Mama mah, “Jangan minta kaya, tapi minta cukup, cukup beli rumah, beli mobil.”
Terima kasih dan maaf banyak-banyak dari kaka.
Sayang Mama.
