It’s a bright mid-winter day and a frigid wind blowing through tall pines creates the only sound audible for miles. I strain to hear anything else at all, but for the occasional snap of a branch the silence is almost deafening. Suddenly, from high atop a nearby pine a song erupts. It’s a cheerful song - high pitched and almost gleeful. And a tiny bird does it’s best to fill a woodland stage with charismatic melody. It’s a bird with a twist… a bill that doesn’t merge in a typical fashion, at all. Instead of a mandible that neatly into an upper maxilla above, these structures crisscross sitting alongside one another. At first glance one would thing this poor, unfortunate creature was injured or deformed. But as one continues to watch, the realization occurs that this is one of the more interesting yet subtle manifestations of evolutionary change, allowing the bird to pluck the smallest of seeds nestled deeply betwixt the scales of tiny pine cones. Nature’s marvels are all around us. One needs only to take the time to keep an open eye and open mind.

Of all the places she could have chosen to sit, Orlaith had opted for the counter, the pizza box sat tactically beside her. She barely had to move to grab a new slice, which she did now, strings of mozzarella stretching enticingly. “No, see, I’d have to be something disgusting, like tuna fish,” she said, shuddering. She really hated tuna. “I couldn’t turn into something nice, like—” pausing, she gestured at the pizza, “a pizza. Or a doughnut!” It was safe to assume she’d thought about this before.

Priscilla wasn’t there, thankfully. Things had been fraught enough with Fenrik when Hilda had shared her news that she wanted to share it without Priscilla being there. If she shared it. Nerves gnawed at her. Rationally she knew Yseult wouldn’t react the same, but still the fear remained. What if, what if, what if. What if she lost what she had left to call family, one after the after? Fenrik first, then Yseult, then Elba, the space around her growing emptier and emptier until all she had left was herself and a woman who was only marrying her for the protection it afforded her. Wouldn’t that be ironic, she thought with a wry twist of her lips as she poured drinks: if she lost everything she cared about in this life in an attempt to make a better one for herself. It would be just her luck.
Hilda handed Yseult her drink before settling down next to her. It had been a long time since they’d sat side by side in this cabin. It felt nice, despite her anxieties. “That’s a Hilda special,” she warned. That meant it was strong. “Don’t down it all in one go, or I’ll have to carry you home.” There wasn’t room for three of them in this cabin, and Priscilla would be back eventually.
