Personal Development Workshop
So excited to be presenting my Personal Development Workshop for the clients of Fedcap & WeCARE. A lot of hard work and preparation went into this and hopefully someones life will change for the better because of it.
Tomorrow afternoon I have an interview for a part-time temporary/seasonal minimum-wage job at a Halloween store. The interview is at a FedCap job center in the Bronx.
I am most likely not going to get this job because I'm overqualified, despite presumably being goth enough.
Today at the "work readiness" welfare class, a guy sitting in front of me recounted a time when some dude paid him five bucks to piss into a cup so that said dude could pass a drug test. But the narrator didn't remember until after he'd pissed that he was taking prescription Xanax, which would have registered as a "drug." He still got his five bucks, though!
Welfare program update: the same dude who had been using his iPad to look at BestGore videos of Mexican drug cartels beheading people last week lovingly referred to his son as "his only seed" today.
First day of the mandatory Fedcap program I've been forced into attending to keep getting welfare. I just spent FIVE FUCKING HOURS LITERALLY DOING NOTHING. Well, not entirely true: in the morning I did have to fill out a form that essentially restates everything on my resume (which would have gone a lot faster if I'd just brought mine in, which nobody had told me to do). NOTHING ELSE TO DO beyond signing in and out and getting a basic rundown of the program's rules, which took maybe half an hour. But I was there from 9 to 2 in a very chilly "classroom" for this.
And the worst part is that this was supposedly a "good" day: the rest of the week and forever onward until I'm employed again, I am supposed to be there for SIX hours straight, while wearing attire that is "business-casual or better" "in case they send you on a job interview" (HA HA).
This shit is simultaneously punitive and infantilizing.
It's worth noting that an hour of this time was spent on a mandatory lunch break. I spent that time in a crowded "participant" lounge (as opposed to the very spacious and calm staff lounge) attempting to read a copy of the Village Voice while some guy tried to show around Best Gore videos of Mexican drug cartels decapitating people, which he was looking up on his iPad. When some of us tried to go back into the classroom a few minutes early, someone brusquely told us that we were not allowed to be in there without an instructor present, as if we were five-year-olds who were going to smear fingerpaint on the walls unless a grownup was watching.

POWER HOUR
Overview: nycTIES Power Hour is a monthly event where Fedcap's young adults will have the opportunity to receive resume writing and interview coaching from nycTIES members. Mock resumes and other resources will be provided on site, and we welcome you to share your own personal tips and experiences, too.
Date: The first Power Hour will be on April 24th from 6-7 PM, and will take place the last Tuesday of every month moving forward.
Location: Fedcap Offices: 119 West 19th Street, 2nd Floor
Volunteer Description: We're seeking 6-8 volunteers who can share their knowledge of resume writing and interview best practices with the young adults of Fedcap.
THE AMAZING RACE
Overview: Join other nycTIES volunteers and the youth from Fedcap for The Amazing Race, the ultimate scavenger hunt competition in Central Park. We’ll form you into teams with other volunteers and Fedcap members, and together you’ll try to take photos of as many things on our scavenger hunt list as you can before the clock stops. Think you find the best dressed dog in the park? What about the cutest couple in a horse-drawn carriage? Bring your A Game to this event because we'll have prizes for the winning team!
Date: Sunday, May 6th from 1:00-2:30PM
Location: Starting point: Columbus Circle on the SW corner of Central Park
Volunteer Description: We're seeking 20-25 volunteers who are interested in the opportunity to spend fun, quality time with the young adults of Fedcap.
CONNECT 2 CAREERS
Overview: Join your fellow nycTIES peers in sharing your career experiences and knowledge with the Fedcap youth. Modeled similar to a speed dating event, Connect2Careers allows nycTIES members from diverse industries to spend one-on-one time talking with Fedcap youth about their career paths to date and coaching them on the skill sets they need to excel in the industry. This workshop will also give the youth an opportunity to practice their communication and personal branding skills.
Date: Sunday, June 3 from 1-2:30PM
Location: TBD (One of Fedcap's Manhattan Offices)
Volunteer Description: We're seeking 20-25 volunteers who are interested in sharing insight and knowledge about their careers to the young adults of Fedcap.
