i have an old macbook lying around (early 2015) & i want u to choose from these operating systems to install in it:

ubuntu (any flavour)

fedora os

linux mint (any flavour)

just install any macos using opencore legacy patcher and call it a day

arch linux (have never tried it before but I'd love to see what I can do!)

there's also an early 2008 white polycarbonate macbook that's lying around but that's a story for another day..will that run arch?

almost a year later, i decided to revisit fedora again. last time, i installed it on my old intel mac (not a daily driver) and called it a day.

this time, i decided to install fedora 43 (workstation) on my m1 macbook air (daily driver) so that i can, in the least, remind myself that yes, utm exists in my machine, i have installed fedora in it, so that i can rice it. so that i don't forget this project like i did last year, lol.

here's some stills i got:

the wallpaper looks rather lovely damn

i seemed to be running into this error quite often, but it resolved by itself:

after installation and restart:

changed the wallpaper

installed fastfetch lol. the instructions are rather lovely, might i add.

some notes:

the OS was quite slow in the initial stages, and i'm lead to believe it's because of the apple virtualisation setting i had.

apple virtualisation also had me reconfigure the screen resolution. initially, the text was far too small for me to read, lol.

the installation video itself is 30 min long lol. and i grabbed the screenshots from that lol.

overall, happy with the setup lol. looking forward to actually ricing this, yum.

solid OS, but i wouldn’t use it as my main one personally. next i’m gonna try linux Mint, because it seems pretty popular and i wanna see what the fuss is about.

Fedora 27 Workstations - See What's New

Fedora 27 Workstation is the latest release of Fedora Linux Distribution. This release features latest GNOME 3.26 as default desktop environment which offers new features like revamped Settings, color emoji support, and the ability for the system search to display more results at once. 

Fedora 27 powered by linux kernel 4.13 series and include LibreOffice 5.4 office suite, also comes with the latest version of the Fedora Media Writer utility, which lets users create bootable SD cards with Fedora Linux that they can use for running the operating system on various ARM devices like the Raspberry Pi. It also supports Windows 7 and improves screenshot handling.

so! finally got around to trying fedora os on early macbook 2015 (still not installed)

here's my thoughts and some landmarks:

1. on pressing the option key after switching on the power button we get here. note to future self: u have that blue icon (oclp) cuz this mac is running macos monterey on oclp currently (planning to switch to macos tahoe when the oclp supports it)

2. wanted to "test" this usb just to see what it does lol. this is something new - i've never seen this in all of the other installs i've done.

3. good to know it's checking and everything looks ok....but why does "supported iso" say "no"? i downloaded iso from the official website?

4. yay!

7. changing the wallpaper and the mode.....ooooooh loving the dark mode for this one!!!!!

8. what others are there? hmmm....this one looks pretty rad too, niiiice!

9. the start menu looks pretty straightforward..there's a lot of apps preloaded, not a surprise. and the "places" is basically spotlight. but looks way cooler, I must admit.

why can't this run on my early 2009 macbook 😩 I'll have to look for the fedora distro that runs in that, I guess? or maybe start ricing with arch linux, idk

@kde-plasma-official can I rice in this? apart from the basic customisation?

1. disk utility in macos, let's partition for fedora!

2. formatted in ExFAT. will it work?

3. time taken: 8 minutes. that's fast, damn.

4. arrive at the installation page, blah blah. same as this post. really. no space?!

5. tried opening GParted to partition stuff, dint work. (with the help of chatgpt. ugh)

6. back into macos and its disk utility. erasing the earlier partition AND doing the same partition again.

7. except this time, it's MS-DOS. chat told me it'd be easier to delete and make the fedora installer install fedora in that partition.

8. time taken: 7 min. i wonder what's that error hmm. also battery getting low huh.

9. back into the installer. from this post ofc. it happened all the fucking time. pls ignore my phone acting like a drunk and a blind bastard trying to squint and focus. i dint really pay attention to what my camera was doing. it finally fucking worked, that's all mattered!!

fucking finally. i'm so fucking happy. this all happened last night and i'm documenting only now cuz I'm lazy. but hey, I'm glad it worked. also. apple's macos. why are u acting like a possessive lil shit. u're useless now. can't u let others take the stage now? fuck the afps file system, man. i had no such problems 4 years ago with macos x lion. hfs+ system is much better.
