Under the cut
Nikolai sits with Gaz, Ghost, Soap, and Price in the mess hall. He’s staying at the base for a while. He plans to work on the helicopter’s maintenance this morning. Nikolai plans on having Jamie help him. Jamie's not being at the mess hall causes worry for him and the others. Nikola waits a few minutes before getting up from the chair and leaving the mess hall, heading to the barracks.
Nikolai knocks on the door of Jamie’s quarters, waiting for an answer.
“Jamie?”
He waits a little longer before entering the room.
Nikolai sees Jamie still in bed. He sits on the bed before seeing Jamie shaking under the blanket.
“Why are you all sweaty?” With a lack of response, Nikolai feels Jamie’s forehead. “I think I’d better take you to the medbay.”
Jamie’s lack of argument adds to his concern. He lifts Jamie out of bed and carries her out of the room.
Nikolai lays Jamie on an exam table. A medic begins to examine her. Nikolai knows that Jamie's lack of arguing is a sign that she's unwell and can't ignore it. He knows Jamie would ignore a cold. He watches the medic get samples to test. Once the medic leaves the room, Nikolai sits on the stool by the exam table. Jamie is still shaking and sweaty.
"Cold," she says, before coughing.
"I know."
Nikolai finds blankets in a cabinet and covers Jamie with one. He texts Price. Nikolai doesn't get a response. He didn't think Price would come to the medbay until the man walked into the exam room. Price sees how unwell Jamie is. The captain knows this means Jamie is sick with something worse than a cold. He knows she'd ignore being sick with a cold.
The medic returns ten minutes later, diagnosing Jamie with viral pneumonia. Believing Jamie ignored being sick with a cold before she went on a mission two days ago. The two men are annoyed, but relieved that Jamie can rest in her room. She whimpers as Nikolai takes the blanket off her. "Come on, let's get you back to bed."
He lifts Jamie and walks out of the room while Price talks to the medic.
Nikolai lies Jamie in bed and covers her with the blanket. He goes to the closet and gets a couple of blankets to cover Jamie with. He goes into the bathroom and grabs the ibuprofen.
Nikolai gives her a couple of pills and her water bottle.
He helps Jamie sit up to take the pills and lies her back in bed.
"I'm sorry I ruined our plans," Jamie says before coughing.
"Don't be. We'll work on the helicopter when you feel better."
Nikolai watches Jamie fall asleep. While he knows she'll be resting most of the day, and he could work on the helicopter himself, he'd rather wait until Jamie can help him.
Nikolai insists on taking care of Jamie himself. Arguing it’ll be easier than everyone arguing whose turn it is. He watched Jamie while she slept, remaining seated beside her desk.
“You don’t have to sit here all day,” Price says. “I’m amazed you are.”
“I know.”
Price walks over to the bed and feels Jamie’s forehead, feeling how warm she is.
He and Nikolai talk about things to make to help Jamie feel better. Price knew Nikolai would want to cook popular Russian dishes. The two are also concerned about getting Jamie to eat.
They settle on chicken noodle soup, knowing Jamie loves that soup. Price departs to inquire if the cook can make soup for Jamie. However, Soup for dinner sounds good to both Nikolai and Price.
The room is quiet for an hour. Nikolai keeps busy on his phone until he hears whimpering. He looks over at Jamie, noticing the signs of her having a nightmare.
Nikolai stands by the bed, watching Jamie, while thinking about how to wake her without scaring her.
He sits on the bed, being careful as he moves Jamie onto his lap in a hug.
“You’re ok, Jamie,” he assures her while rubbing her back. “It’s just a nightmare. Come on, wake up.”
Nikolai worries about what her nightmare could be about. The previous mission was completed without any deaths.
Jamie takes a few minutes to wake up. Jamie cries while looking at Nikolai.
“You’re safe,” he repeats.
Jamie hugs him and cries. This concerns Nikolai. He feels Jamie’s forehead, feeling how warm it is. The Russian suspects this was a fever dream that terrified Jamie.
Nikolai continues to hold Jamie once she’s calm. He’s concerned about the fever dream she had. Hoping it’ll stop once she’s over pneumonia. He hears her wheezing as her head rests on his shoulder.
“You should take a shower. That’ll help, then soup for dinner.”
Within a few minutes, Jamie is in the shower in her private bathroom. Nikolai sits on the bed, worried about the fever nightmare. He had no intention of staying in her room overnight, but now he worries about leaving her alone. Nikolai sits on the bed, texting Price about what happened. Nikolai knew Price would be concerned. Price agrees with Nikolai’s idea. Both are hoping Jamie will let Nikolai stay in her room with her overnight.
Once Jamie dresses in warm pajamas and takes more medicine, Nikolai takes her down to the mess hall.
Gaz, Ghost, Price, and Soap are happy to see Jamie feeling well enough to join them for dinner. Price did not inform them of Jamie’s nightmare.
“So you’re the reason we’re eating soup for dinner,” Soap jokes.
“Oh, shut it,” Ghost comments. “It’s not like it was your only choice.”
The six enjoy their dinner together. Jamie’s lack of complaints about being unwell strikes the five men as strange.
Jamie is back in bed after dinner. She agrees to Nikolai’s request to stay in her room overnight. Jamie didn’t think he meant now, at six. She argues he doesn’t have to stay in the room this early, but Nikolai argues he’d rather stay with her. Jamie can watch TV on her tablet with Nikolai for a couple of hours before going to sleep. On the air mattress, Nikolai tries to sleep, but worries Jamie will have another fever-induced nightmare.
The sun shines through the window, waking Nikolai. He gets up from the air mattress and closes the shade and curtains before Jamie wakes up. He feels her forehead, not liking how warm Jamie still feels. He sits on the edge of the bed, waiting.
Nikolai doesn’t wait long for Jamie to wake up. He sees how unwell Jamie feels. Jamie’s coughing cuts the silence.
“I feel like I’m dying,” Jamie complains between coughs.
“Stop being dramatic.” Nikolai helps Jamie sit up. “This will help.”
Nikolai knew Jamie wasn’t very sick and that she’d die, but he could hear why Jamie felt like she was. He trusts the medics who told him she didn’t have to be admitted to the medbay, but he worries Jamie is getting worse. He gives her medicine and has her take a shower and see what happens.
Nikolai knows she also needs to eat. They both have yet to have breakfast. He goes down to the kitchen once Jamie is back in bed.
“How is she?” Price asks.
“Awful,” Nikolai says. “I’m aware she’ll worsen before getting better, but it’s tempting to have her in the medbay.”
“You were told by the medics what to look out for. She’ll be ok.” Nikolai sighs. He knows Price is right. “You know what? I believe Jamie’s habit of ignoring her illness is not helpful, and it makes it difficult not to believe she’s in a more serious condition than she is.”
Price leaves the kitchen. Nikolai continues to cook. He also continues to think that Jamie needs to go to the medbay.
With a tray in hand, Nikolai walks into Jamie’s room. Jamie is still awake, but Nikolai can tell she wants to sleep. He sets the tray on the desk, and gets a cup of tea, and a bowl of oatmeal for her. He puts the tea on the nightstand and hands her the bowl.
“Eat a little, then you can sleep.”
Jamie takes the bowl and starts eating. She feels well enough to eat, but all she wants to do is sleep.
Nikolai sits at the desk and eats while watching Jamie.
Ten minutes pass. Jamie finished the oatmeal and tea. Nikolai watches her lie under the blankets. Soon, Jamie is asleep. He grabs the dishes and leaves the room. Closing the door behind him. He knows Jamie will feel unwell for another five days before feeling better.
Jamie is starting to feel a bit better on day three of having pneumonia. She and Nikolai know it’ll still be days before she’s 100%. Going to the mess hall for breakfast tires Jamie. She goes back to bed. Nikolai still stays with her.
“Really?” Jamie comments as she lies in bed.
“Yes. I have nothing else to do. I said we’d work on the helicopter together. It can wait.”
Jamie remains unsure about Nikolai’s decision. She knows it’s routine maintenance, not repairs, but she’s aware of how skipping routine maintenance makes a helicopter unsafe. She hopes Nikolai isn’t being foolish. Jamie falls asleep. Nikolai decides he’s going to the base’s gym to work out.
Nikolai walks into Jamie’s room three hours later. He thought she’d still be asleep. The Russian worries as he sees Jamie’s bed is empty, knowing Jamie’s tendency to ignore being sick when she can. He reminds himself that she is unwell and should not stay out of bed for long. Nikolai sees that the bathroom door is shut. He sighs, relieved to hear Jamie is in the bathroom. She tells the man that she wants to try a bath instead of a shower. Nikolai knows a bath is more relaxing, but he’s not sure that it will help clear her lungs. Nikolai tells Jamie he’ll be sitting at her desk.
Jamie walks out of the bathroom an hour later, dressed in pajamas. Nikolai watches her crawl into bed. He smiles, assuming the bath relaxed Jamie, expecting her to sleep.
“Oh, shut it,” Jamie comments before Nikolai can say anything.
“Too relaxed?”
“At least the cough stopped.”
“Time for more medicine. I’ll let you sleep until dinner.” Nikolai gives Jamie more medicine, and she falls asleep. “I hope that cough doesn’t plan on sticking around once the pneumonia clears up,” Nikolai sighs, knowing how annoying it’s going to be if the cough sticks around.
Two weeks after Jamie recovers from pneumonia, it's back. Nikolai sits by Jamie's bed in the medbay, replaying the terrifying moment he walked into Jamie's room to find her having a hard time breathing.
Price walks into the room, seeing Jamie asleep in the bed, wearing an oxygen mask. Je sees Nikolai on the chair beside the bed, holding Jamie's hand with a worried expression.
"Something is wrong," Nikolai says. "She's healthy and fit. The fact that she got pneumonia once is odd, but twice, and it's worse."
"The medics ran tests. They're not concerned."
"They should be!"
"Worrying isn't going to help."
"Then what do I need to do?"
"You need to calm down. She'll be ok."
Price knows that Nikolai is struggling to relax after finding Jamie struggling to breathe. He knows that scared the Russian man. Price is a little concerned about the fact that Jamie is sick with pneumonia again, but he trusts the medics.
Two days pass. The medics believe Jamie is well enough to rest in her room.
Nikolai leans on the counter in the kitchen. He didn't think Price would walk in at midnight.
"When was the last time you slept?" Price asks.
"Since she got sick again. I don't care what the medics said. She shouldn't have gotten sick again."
"I know, but she'll be fine. You don't have to stay up all night. In fact, you know that's not helping her."
Price makes Nikolai tea.
The two sit at a table in the mess hall. The warm drink helps calm Nikolai, but he's still worried. His mind is still thinking about when he found Jamie struggling to breathe.
"You know she's doing better," Price says. "She's not on oxygen. She's in her room. Although getting her to eat is difficult, she's doing better. She'll be ok."
Nikolai says nothing as the two finish their tea.
Price follows Nikolai into his room.
"You going to stay until I fall asleep?" The Russian asks.
"Maybe I should, but no."
Price leaves the room. Nikolai lies in bed. His mind still worries about Jamie, but the lack of sleep for the past few days is catching up to him. Soon, Nikolai is asleep.
The next morning, Nikolai walks into Jamie's room, seeing Jamie trying to get out of bed.
"You're too sick to be out of bed."
"And I shouldn't have gotten sick again like this!"
Nikolai pushes Jamie back in bed. He knows she's sick of being sick. Nikolai knows she'll be unwell for another two weeks. The emdics do worry that this time, a persistent cough will be present after the pneumonia clears.
