Written on the occasion of a friend's 80th Birthday. Made me think about my own age.

~ Am I really? Can it be … ?

I laugh to think that this is me ...

It seems like only yesterday

That all my friends came round to play!

No, no … it’s really quite bizarre:

It doesn’t square with how things are:

How come my life has rolled along

Without my knowing where it’s gone?

Perhaps it’s just a passing dream,

Wherein things are not as they seem?

Yes, that’s it … it can’t be true!

I’ve still so many things to do ...

Because, you see, I’m far too young -

I’m still the confused eldest son,

Whose future is, at best, unclear

In terms of choosing my career!

And I should also like to say

My memory’s perfectly OK;
