It was a late Friday night in the mid of November. It had been unnaturally cold throughout the month but however, this didn’t stop “Mary” nor the rest of the town from going out and having a good time. The old school diner was packed with people as it was the debut of having live performances every Friday night from here on out. Naturally, she wouldn’t have really cared for this sort of thing but she needed to make her presence in the community as normal as possible. And naturally, that would mean she would have to “hang out” on Friday nights in places like these.

Men. 

Such odd, fragile creatures that thrived off things that were so meaningless, pathetic, and disgusting. They were obviously the far less superior sex... so weak. A thousand thoughts ran through the witches head as she looked down at the sleeping man. Her face twisted with disgust and annoyance.

“How pathetic....I can’t believe you summoned me of all people in this world...” she hissed at the slumbering figure, “You haven’t the slightest idea about what just got yourself into.”

The witch raised a leg up and gently set her foot on the small mattress, carful not to wake the man. She hoisted herself up and straddled the human. Leaning over him, getting a good look at his peaceful, she brushed some strands of hair off his forehead. She placed her other hand on his pillow by his head. The black ash from her hands and feet smudged all over the sheets.

“Wake up, holy man.”

“Well, well, well...look what we got here...you seem like you have somewhere to be in quite a hurry, especially since the world ended...where do you really need to get to this fast?”

People say that when you see the love of your life for the first time, the whole world just freezes around you. At least that’s what Vanessa’s grandma use to tell her was she was still around. As the dumb teen she was, Vanessa would scoff and giggle at the statement, telling her grandma that couldn’t be true. It was just simply impossible. Well... Vanessa’s grandma must have been laughing her ass off in heaven or something that night because Vanessa fell in love. And she fell hard. Her whole world came to a screeching halt as the man walked into the bar. She couldn’t help but stare at the stranger, take the sight of him in as much as she could. Beautifully tan with dark brown hair and some warm brown eyes to go with that handsome face. She could feel the butterflies growing in her stomach. 

Now while Vanessa was checking out this stranger, she hadn’t realized she had been playing the same keys on the piano for quite some time. People were starting to look at her a bit funny and her band was trying to get her back down to her Earth. Vanessa finally snapped out of her tranced as they called her name one last time. 

“Hey boys...I think we should change up the songs a bit tonight,” she said to her band as she stood up, “I think we should play some oldies.”

The place was packed. The crowd was loud. Her blood quickly pumped through her veins as adrenaline surged through her body. The room spun and the lights were almost blinding but she didn’t care. Her voice rang out loud and proud and her fingers danced on top of the piano keys. She had completely lost herself within her music. The cheering from the crowd only pushed her to keep going, even though she was already 10 minutes into her intermission.  

Heading off stage, Vanessa Rey made her way to the bar. She was ready for a beer or two before continuing her show. 

“Hey! What does a girl have to do to get a drink around here?”
