Ezra being even less respectable because she's female, and being even more careful with her safety because life is that much more dangerous for a lone woman. She’s built up the alcohol tolerance of someone far larger than she is because it’s one more thing she has to be careful about, learned to shoot fast and accurately, learned to stitch up her own wounds because she has no way to know whether she can trust a doctor if she needs his services, even if he is competent.
Ezra who works with her horse better than any man and who dazzles men with her smile and who wears a diamond ring and earrings that flash in the lamplight. Ezra wearing low-cut dresses when she needs to because that’s just another weapon in her arsenal to attract a mark or be used against an opponent (men are so easy to distract) and caring a lot about her appearance and not being ashamed of it. Ezra who wears her clothes like armour and uses them as a weapon -- and not just the fabulous hats with the huge feathers that protect her skin from the sun with lace veils, hiding long hat pins she can use to kill you if she must. Ezra has knives hidden in her skirts and sometimes carries a gun you can see as well as the knife strapped to her thigh and the gun to her ankle because being unprepared will get her killed faster than anything else will. And she uses her clothes to hide things – there's a set of lock picks concealed in her lace cuffs, for starters.
Ezra with dainty gloves that hide the calluses from shuffling cards and firing her guns and handling Chaucer, and who has a wide variety of lotions arranged on her dresser that she uses to keep her hands soft. Ezra with beautiful jewellery for all occasions, because you can pack jewels in a hurry, keep lots on you and sell them when you need the money, and beautiful shoes and flawless eyeliner. Ezra who single-handedly finances half of Four Corners’ businesses because she needs things to wear, obviously. Ezra who wears ties and waistcoats and absolutely exquisite corsets when she feels like it because she knows she looks amazing in them, she looks amazing in everything, and has outfits for riding and outfits for poker and outfits for everything. She has more trunks than her mother does not because she’s finally got a small amount of permanence and doesn’t have to be able to fit all her clothes into one bag that she can sling over Chaucer’s back at a moment’s notice and now she gets to have some of the clothes she wanted but could never have. Ezra who keeps dynamite next to her lipstick and never, ever mixes up any of the little pots or tubes up even when they're unlabelled, and who probably hides more than anyone will ever know in her makeup box.
Ezra who works with what she's been given, who attracts children like flowers do bees and who has always been completely alone and has always had to look out for number one because she's the only one she can trust – her mother will marry her off given half a chance and a reasonable expectation of profit and she cannot give her that chance if she wants to keep her freedom. Ezra who loves her horse more than most people love their spouses and who works with Chaucer like a finely tuned machine and who has all of her many dresses cut to hide the muscle that has kept her alive and able to run in even the most impractical footwear(Ezra Standish never trips or rolls an ankle, no matter how impractical her shoes are. It just isn't done.)
Ezra who has beautiful clothes that Vin secretly loves the look and feel of because she’s never worn anything so lovely and fine, never even known anyone who had such beautiful things. Ezra buying beautiful clothes that suit them for the others because she can, and for the first time she has friends she wants to buy things for. They stroke the fabric in silence, in awe and not quite believing something so fine, something so beautiful and soft and silky, is for them. Ezra coaches both Casey and JD in how to walk in a dress, heels, how to sit down, how to pour tea, how to ride sidesaddle and use a fan and handkerchief as weapons that can be as effective as a knife, and how to use them to communicate too, and somehow makes it fun, about them, just another skill that you should know, like reloading without looking and which way home is.
Ezra knows exactly what to say to incite men into fighting for her, and takes the liberty of lightening the pot a little before she slips outside, but who has to lose hands of poker a little more often than male!Ezra because a lady must be a little more careful, and a lady is more likely to have something demanded of her in exchange for her life if she wins a little too often. And Ezra doesn’t give anything she doesn’t want to.
