F/F February Day 5: Risa

Since I write mostly for Disco characters and Risa isn’t really a thing in Disco (thank god since the concept weirds me out), I’m playing with the prompt by just borrowing inspiration from a scene from one of the most prominent Risa episodes, Captain's Holiday.

On a more general note, I’ll be skipping some prompt days from here on out—despite being a slow writer, I assumed minimally-edited microfics wouldn’t possibly take long, but it turns out writing, editing, and posting to ao3 and tumblr is taking nearly an hour a day, which is time I won’t have every day for a month (esp. since I want to conserve some time to FINALLY finish and post those longer fics that have been “almost ready” for so long. ;D) So, I’ll only be doing some days' daily prompts (with some longer fics coming soon!)

“I am supposed,” Ellen says, with dignity, as she slides into her sleeping bag, “to be on vacation.”

“Hmm, of course you are,” says Michael, slipping into her own sleeping bag and biting back a mischievous grin. “But I think we both know you’re having far more fun out-maneuvering time police and treasure hunters while unraveling a colonial archeological cover-up with me than you would have been sulking around trying to resist the urge to catch up on work.”

“You seem to think you know a lot about my shore leave habits, Burnham.”

Michael grins, staring up at the cavern ceiling. “Am I wrong?”

Silence greets her, and she turns to see Ellen not even bothering to hide her smile.

“I told you,” Philippa rasps as they approach the hill, her mouth curling into a triumphant grin despite her split lip. “I told you I could find it.”

“You also said--” Jett pauses for breath between words, gripping Philippa’s shoulder more tightly against the weight of the injured woman in their arms. “You said you wouldn’t say I told you so.”

“I didn’t.”

“You did. You--” She stops speaking as Ensign Mahto coughs again from her chairlike perch between them. “Hey, kid, how you doing there?”

Mahto says nothing, her eyelids fluttering.

“You’re doing great, Ensign,” Philippa says. With her black eye and ripped sleeve, she looks worse than Jett feels and almost as bad as Mahto sounds, but when she speaks to the younger woman her voice is firm. “You’re doing great, and we’re almost there.”

Mud squelches under Jett’s feet as they pick their way up the side of the hill. Philippa uses her chin to point at the camouflaged transport beacon. “There.”

“Right where you--where you figured,” Jett manages. “You see that, kid?”

Mahto smiles faintly.

“For the record,” Philippa says, somehow finding the breath to continue their theater, “I never said I--wouldn’t say--told you so. Said I wouldn’t--gloat--”

“And whaddayou--call what you’re doing now--” Jett leans her hip against the beacon.

“Well, we made it, so I am celebrating our success--” Philippa’s rejoinder whirls away in a shimmer of gold as the transporter beam swirls around them.

Jett’s arms feel impossibly light as the waiting medics lift Mahto away, but seconds later they are full again as Philippa stumbles and Jett grabs her. Somehow she is still speaking, relaying Mahto’s condition to Culber even as she sags against Jett, and she falls silent only after he follows Mahto’s stretcher out the door.

“We did make it, Phil,” Jett manages, gripping her tightly as a second wave of medics converges on them. “We did it. We did.”

F/F February Day 4: Discovery

The comforter is warm and heavy as Michael crawls into bed, wiping the last of her tears on the softness of the clean pillowcase as Tracy settles in beside her, still in her civvies after helping Michael into her pajamas. 

Michael feels impossibly worn, as though one more crisis might blow her away, and she finds herself reaching out to grip the smooth surface of the fitted sheet with her fingertips as though such an action can hold her down against any such metaphorical gales. Tracy hums softly in concern, laying her palm between Michael’s shoulderblades, and, exhaling softly, Michael feels her eyes drift closed, the warmth of her partner’s hand and the soft hum of Discovery's engines lulling her into tear-stained but restful sleep.
