RAYMOND CHANDLER once remarked that 'American is an ill-at-ease language.' What makes you at ease with your language is liking it for its own sake, and this we have never done. Words were, like everything else, to be used and thrown away. At their best, they ought to evaporate entirely, constitute the ideal transparent medium for meaning. Start to look at words just for pleasure and you're a sissy, a poet. Not surprisingly, this tradition of see-through language has not left us especially good at analyzing prose. We are in fact, English teachers included, wonderfully inept at describing the 'good writing' we all say we cherish. We don't know what to look for, nor what to call it when it trips us up. And so, mostly, we don't look at all. When we do, nine times in ten it is only to make sure we've been correct, written 'good English,' no spelling errors showing, no pronoun references unzipped, no modifiers dangling. If everything seems o.k., if we've come smiling from the world's great verbal snare uncaught, there's an end to it. What else can you say?

F/F February Day 5: Risa
General Audiences | 120 Words | No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Michael Burnham/Ellen Landry
Characters: Michael Burnham, Ellen Landry
Summary: This month I’m writing daily microfics for various pairings using these Femslash February Star Trek prompts by howverychaotic; each pairing will pop up a few times throughout the month, with one compilation work per pairing and one microfic per chapter.
Notes: Relevant tags: History, Flirting, Unresolved Sexual Tension, Security Chief's Holiday, Michael as Vash
Since I write mostly for Disco characters and Risa isn’t really a thing in Disco (thank god since the concept weirds me out), I’m playing with the prompt by just borrowing inspiration from a scene from one of the most prominent Risa episodes, Captain's Holiday.
On a more general note, I’ll be skipping some prompt days from here on out—despite being a slow writer, I assumed minimally-edited microfics wouldn’t possibly take long, but it turns out writing, editing, and posting to ao3 and tumblr is taking nearly an hour a day, which is time I won’t have every day for a month (esp. since I want to conserve some time to FINALLY finish and post those longer fics that have been “almost ready” for so long. ;D) So, I’ll only be doing some days' daily prompts (with some longer fics coming soon!)
