Varric as an unreliable narrator is a real mess.
Like... I sometimes see people commenting on how their Inquisitor had a certain expectation how Hawke would be based on Varric's story and I ask myself:
Which version?
The book he wrote?
The book he published after edits?
The story he told Cassandra on the fly?
Because the *book* - The Tale of the Champion - is very, very different from what he tells Cassandra (what we experience). And that could also be very, very different from the truth.
I admit that I also had my Inky pick a favourite from the "characters" in Varric's story. From the - very fictional - book, because Fen'Revas didn't get the Cassandra treatment of being told that "actual events" until later.

Which probably triggers Varric to say "Well, actually... What really happened was..."
Doesn't change his mind, tho...
