This Fenris is Claustrophobic

The man was put into what amounts to a Magic Iron Maiden Without Spikes and pretty much tortured. He’s gonna have some Bad Feelings about small spaces.

Bonus: I know the voice actor just has a very specific voice but I like to think that Fenris’ voice is all gravely like that due to the sheer amount of screaming he did in there. Like whoops there go your fucking vocal chords.

♥Pregnancy HC: Fenris

Fenris is not outwardly emotional so when you tell him at first he thinks your joking. Then he notices the bump and realizes this isn’t just some prank you and Varric schemed up to mess with him. His initial emotion is panic but it's that silent existential crisis kind of panic where he just stares into nothing and chugs wine like it's water. He’s extremely anxious in the months leading up to the pregnancy always hovering around you and making sure you don't lift or climb anything you shouldn’t. He loves you very much and he doesn't want anything to hurt you or the baby but he has doubts about his ability to be a father. You liked to joke saying you “had never seen someone so afraid of something so small” but he is. It's a huge responsibility and he isn’t sure if he is ready.

 His first reaction to his baby: They’re so...perfect…

 After the Pregnancy: He won’t put the baby down, even fashioning a sling for his chest to hold them constantly. His instincts just take over and while he is still anxious about it this tiny person is his arms and he wants to protect them. When you feed them he hovers. When you change them he hovers. When you dress them he hovers. Not in a bad way just in an “I want to help however I can” kind of way. You teach him how to change diapers and tie laces and as the child gets older, mash-up and make their food and feed them. He’s a quick learner and is always up for helping you.

 As the child grows: Fenris is a strict father once he gets in the groove of things but it's in a loving way. He doesn't want you around mages or to go off into the woods by yourself though you try to insist that they need to explore and know about the world around them. Fenris insists on teaching them yourselves and you agree, teaching them to read and basic arithmetic as well as with swords and shields. Fenris is a very good weapons user and he teaches his child well how to fight and also how to be safe with their weapon of choice. 

 If his child is a mage: he will be calm at first because the child probably finds out about their abilities while with him since they spend so much time together but once the child is put to bed and tells you about it he loses it. He doesn't know how to feel, he’s angry and sad but he just loves his child so much. Over time he will come to terms with it but there will be tense moments where he bristles. He’s not abusive, just wary.

Fenris isn't the biggest fan of Valentine's day, but then Hawke actually gifts him a box of chocolates (his first one, unbeknownst to Hawke).

The first thing Fenris teaches his children is not how to fight. He doesn’t show them how to make a fist or hold a sword. He doesn’t teach them how to sneak about or where the weak points in a person’s armor would be located.

He sits down with them, cuddled close in bed, with a large picture book in his lap, and teaches them how to read.

Because fighting has brought only pain and sorrow and rage in his life. But literacy? That is how he broke free from some of the final chains of his past.

Having a family removed the rest.

Ahhhh thank you so much!!!! In no particular order, here are some of my favorite Fen headcanons (not all of them are mine tbh I’m sure I’ve stolen these from other people but y’know)

Fen is a HUGE history nerd. Like, learning about it and reading about it are his favorite things

Fenris is rather short compared to others, but elves in general tend to be shorter than humans (though whether it’s genetic or lack of nutrition is up in the air)

Fenris cannot cook to save his goddamn life. Boy subsides on what he buys and the food the others hoist on him

Personally I hc Fenris as ace? But I can never make up my mind whether he’s demisexual or just asexual. Anyways he’s ace and I love him. [This is the best ace Fen fic, and this is including the ones I’ve written ahaha]

Someone please get this man a support dog/mabari because he needs one. Also I think Fenris really loves animals except for horses, they weird him out. He doesn’t ever collar any pets though, or call them pets. They’re his companions and if he has to put some kind of control on them, it’s a harness. [I know that this fic is responsible for putting these ideas in my head]

I have a lot of really sad headcanons about his childhood but I’m trying to keep this lighthearted so here’s just one, less traumatizing one: Fenris picked the two-handed sword because he was told elves couldn’t use them. 

Speaking about weapons, Fenris is proficient in all swords and has used shields in the past, but spears elude him and axes are a bit too unwieldy for him. If he has to he can use them, but he prefers not to. 

Fenris is great at languages. I think he only learned Tevene, Common, and Qunlat under Danarius but he quickly picks up Orlesian and Antivian when he has the opportunity.

After he leaves you the first time, Fenris feels extremely guilty. He also definitely took the red sash that he keeps around his wrist, but I feel like Hawke gives him the crest b/c it’s such a specific item.

What do you think Fenris carries in all those small pouches on his belt?

You know it wasn’t something I ever gave much thought to before. But after taking some time to think about it I think I have a substantial answer and a new head canon for him.

I think at first its just necessities; gold he’s managed to collect, non-perishable foods, bandages or health potions. I think even after the first few years in Kirkwall that’s all there is. But over the years he doesn’t need to carry everything he posseses anymore so the pockets eventually begin to be filled with other things. 

One day you might empty his pockets to find odd shaped rocks, pieces of parchment with words written down that he doesn’t recognize so he can ask Hawke or Varric to translate, maybe even the Angel of Death (Isabela isn’t the only one who can hide cards). 

To someone on the outside these items are nothing more than junk. But for Fenris these are the first things he ever gets to call his own. Whether they are worthless or not is besides the point. They belong to him and him alone. 

Of course there comes a time where a different sort of item is resting in his pocket, He keeps checking to make sure its there, the round metal easily felt through the leather. He’s had it for days and has been desperately trying to find the right moment to reveal it. He’s been waiting and waiting for that moment. The sun is setting on the coast, Hawke’s face is bathed in the fiery light and he knows the time is now. He gets down on one knee and says the words he’s been practicing. “I am yours, will you be mine?”
