“Holy shit,” A voice Charles recognized as his soulmate’s, interrupted his previous thoughts, “It’s so red.”
Did he want to know what they were talking about? Not really, but damn was he curious.
He shifted in his seat, turning his attention back as Mattia walked into the room. Standing alongside him was arguably the most beautiful person he’d ever seen. Charles had half a brain cell to close his mouth as Mattia introduced them.
“Charles, this is Y/n,” Mattia said, gesturing to you, who smiled and lifted a hand to briefly wave at him. “They will be your new lead mechanic. Y/n, Charles is our new driver this year.”
“Holy shit, I thought I was doing one of the academy guys. It’s Charles Leclerc right in front of me,” the voice in his head said, and suddenly, it clicked for him. This person - Y/n - was not only his new crew member, but they were also his soulmate.
He couldn’t say anything about it either. Not if he actually wanted to get to know you first. Ferrari is notorious for their strict rules, and he knew that if he said anything, it would jeopardize your position more than his.
So he stayed silent. For years.
You two had arguably the best driver-mechanic relationship in all of Formula 1, but there was always that nagging voice in the back of his head. Was it your own thoughts? Sometimes, yes, but he also had his own conscious ranting about how he should tell you.
So far, 2026 has been going well for the Ferraris. They were consistently at the top, the car was running great overall. Then, it was the middle of the 2026 season when he heard the fateful thought.
”If Fred won’t hear me out, I’ll leave. That rattle is borderline dangerous at this point.”
Charles choked on his drink, causing Lewis to laugh at him before Charles got up to look for you. After deciding you were definitely not in his garage and walking aimlessly through a few hallways, he found you outside of Fred’s office.
”Hey, I’ve been looking for you!” Charles said as casually as he could, but even you picked up on the forced smile as he leaned against the wall ahead of you. “How have you been?”
”Could be better,” You shrugged, looking between him and the door to Fred’s office. “I have a meeting with Fred to go over something I found with the car.”
”Is it bad?” He asked, tilting his head at you.
”Is it bad, he asks,” You voice in his head scoffed, “If only he knew just how bad it is. It’s astounding how this car is still able to run, and he asks, is it bad.”
”Could be worse, but still pretty bad,” You responded audibly with a tight-lipped smile. “I’ll give you the rundown later.”
“Just don’t leave without me,” Charles whispered, pulling you into a brief hug before you pushed through to Fred’s office.
“Where else am I going to go?” You smirked just before closing the door, “I’m your ride to the hotel.”
Charles was a nervous wreck, waiting for you to come back out, and it was like your thought ceased as soon as that door shut. He tried to listen in for a while before he was pulled back to the garage by Lewis. They needed to review some data before the next session.
”Charles, any notes from you?”
”Last session, I felt a little delayed and some vibrations,” He responded in more of a question. A couple of his mechanics looked between each other, speaking in a silent language he didn't understand. “Felt like a clutch or brake issue, but I don’t know if it was the track or not. The delay, I don’t know. The car just isn’t going like it was at the beginning of the season.”
”The turbocharger has looked a little weird recently,” another mechanic spoke up from the corner.
”And we haven’t had the chance to replace the battery yet this year,” Someone else said. “Just don’t have the budget for it, apparently.”
”Where is Y/n? They need to be here for this.”
”A meeting with Fred,” Charles answered.
”A meeting with Fred that has now ended,” You said, coming into the room. You stood at the front of the room and looked each team member in the eye, sarcastically muttering, “Thank you for waiting for me to finish up the meeting before getting started. Really appreciate it.”
“We didn’t get too far, just a few problems Charles was having last session.”
”Yeah, I know, but first,” You said, pausing to make sure everyone was listening, “After this weekend, I will be leaving Scuderia Ferrari. I will not be standing by a team that would rather prioritize facilities and meals over the safety of their drivers and crew members.”
The room collectively went silent before there was an uproar. Everyone was talking over each other, and asking frantic questions that had absolutely nothing to do with your job at hand.
”Hey!” You shouted, gaining their attention by slamming your hands on the table. “We still have a race to prepare for. The lithium battery needs to be replaced. Tell me we have a used one or something in storage to pull from.”
”We only had the one.’
”Then someone get a new one yesterday. I don’t give a shit about the budget, get it now,” You sighed. “That’s the delay, and hopefully the mini electrical fires didn’t damage the internal mechanisms too much. For the turbocharger-“
”Someone is already on it.”
”Good, at least someone here is proactive,” You sneered under your breath before looking back to everyone in the room. “Now, I know it’s not ideal for me to leave after this week, but please know, I didn’t plan to go out like this. I just hope you’ll be able to understand why soon. As for right now, get those parts in and on the cars before tomorrow.”
You wasted no time before getting up and leaving the room. The room erupted in chaos. Some are freaking out about how they’re going to function once you leave, some are frantically searching for the parts the team needs, and some are yelling just to yell.
“God, I need to get out of here. The 23rd can’t come soon enough. I can’t wait to be in a different garage,” Your voice rang in his head.
Charles quickly followed after you. You were already on your way out to the car park.
“Wait!” He ran to catch up with you. “Where are you going?”
”Back to the hotel,” You responded quietly, “Thought you wouldn’t want to talk to me after that surprise.”
“I’ll always talk to you,” He quipped, holding his hand out for the keys. “I’ll drive this time.”
”Thanks,” You muttered as you pulled the keys out of your pocket and handed them over to him. He opened the door for you and helped you get into the passenger seat before rounding to go into the driver’s seat. He pulled out of the space and made his way away from the track. After a few minutes of silence, you sighed, “You can ask.”
“Why are you leaving?” He asked quietly as he wound down through the quiet roads.
“Fred was micromanaging the budget and blocking me from buying you parts. Your lithium battery is about to combust, and your turbocharger, if it came into contact with any hot fuel or oil, would have exploded,” You explained as you leaned your head against the window to look over at him lazily. “Fred said nothing happened yet, and I was being dramatic. I said if explosions were the only way I’d get new parts, then I don’t want to be part of that lawsuit. I put my notice in immediately.”
“Where are you going now?” He questioned, and when you went silent, he racked his brain to fill the space. “You mentioned going somewhere on the 23rd? Something about a different garage, so I just thought-”
“Charles, I never said that out loud…” You trailed off, slowly sitting up in your seat. “Unless…”
“Surprise?”
“Wait, so you’re telling me this whole time, we’ve been soulmates,” You pressed, getting louder and louder as you went on, “And you never said anything?”
“If I did, you would’ve been fired,” Charles said quickly, trying his best to diffuse the situation. “I’ve seen it before. Ferrari is ruthless, and they don’t care about soulmates. I knew if I said anything, you would get fired, and I couldn’t do that to you.”
“So you just…knew…?”
“Yeah, but,” Charles tried to defend his stance, but he couldn’t. He knew it was the right thing to do, but that didn’t make it sound any better. “I’m sorry.”
“No, I’m sorry, I never realized,” You relented as you thought back to all of the moments Charles chose to be close to you, but never any of the other crew members. It made sense now. “I guess you should know about the full plans now, huh?”
“I’d like to,” He said with a small smile as he glanced over at you, “Just don’t leave without me.”
“I’m not leaving F1, just Ferrari,” you reassured, holding is hand on top of the gear stick. “I’m going to Red Bull. They need some major help over there.”
“Still,” Charles sighed, “At least now, we can actually be soulmates in peace.”
“That’s going to be a lot of paperwork,” You chuckled for the first time that day, and it was music to Charles’ ears. “Cross-team soulmates are going to mean so much paperwork.”
