Ferguson Friday: THE AMERICAN TERRORIST On the evening of June 17, 2015, a white man executed nine members of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Charleston, SC during a prayer meeting. Before opening fire, the killer told the members, “I have to do it, You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.” The ideology that led this white man to find it acceptable to murder 9 people and commit an act of domestic terrorism was not learned in a vacuum. Despite the media’s efforts to portray the killer as an emotionally misguided anomaly, terrorism against black and brown bodies is embedded in the fabric of American society. In a country where an unarmed black person is killed by police roughly every 28 hours, black people are incarcerated at nearly 6 times the rate of white people, and 784 active hate groups were counted as of 2014 (Southern Poverty Law Center), black and brown people consistently live as walking targets. Dajerria Becton 15-year old Black female attended a pool party in McKinney, TX was slammed to the ground by an officer while wearing a bikini Mya Hall 27-year old Black transgender woman crashed into guard post at NSA building NSA security officers opened fire on the vehicle, killing her Lilian Yamileth Oliva 19-year old Honduran female mother attempted suicide while in family detention center in Karnes City, TX ultimately deported despite facing domestic abuse and death threats in home country Rev. Clementa Pinckney 41-year old Black male South Carolina senator senior pastor of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC massacred during prayer meeting Henry Claude Jean “Tulile” shoeshine worker of Haitian descent Feb. 10, 2015 was hung in a park in Santiago, Dominican Republic with hands and feet bound Kalief Browder 16-year old Black male arrested for allegedly stealing backpack held at Rikers Island Prison for 3 years without trial committed suicide at 22-years old
