It has been a long time coming!

A groundbreaking ceremony for the City of Oceanside’s future aquatics center was held yesterday at the site’s adjacent El Corazon Senior Center in Oceanside. The event marks the beginning of what will become the city’s largest aquatics facility in the heart of Oceanside: El Corazon Aquatics Center.

Oceanside has two pools currently, Brooks Street and Marshall Street, both having their 60th Anniversaries this year.

This future world-class aquatic center will provide competition-level amenities to serve Oceanside residents, school districts (including OHS, El Camino HS, and MiraCosta College) and host regional meets. In addition to competitive amenities, the aquatics center will accommodate recreational features for all.

There was a lot of local support at the groundbreaking ceremony, many city officials were present including Mayor Peter Weiss and Oceanside Lifeguard Capt. Bill Curtis, also Visit Oceanside CEO Leslee Gaul, retired OHS Coach Bill Wagner and his wife Ruth, and Fernando Hernandez (OHS 2014) who is assistant to Tasha Boerner Horvath, California State Assembly Member from District 76.

The $19.8 million construction contract for the future aquatics center was approved by the City Council October 9, 2019.  Work is scheduled to start on December 1, 2019 and be completed in May 2021 with a grand opening slated for June 2021.

The El Corazon Aquatics Center will include the following components: • 56-Meter Competition pool • Diving boards • Spectator seating • Locker rooms and family changing rooms • Warm-water instructional/therapy pool • Splash pad for children • Shade structure • Concession area • Multi-purpose classroom • Lifeguard/staff offices
