Festival Hack #4 – Let’s get rollin’!
This is another very common scenario at Boom. Or, rather: After Boom. You are packed and ready to hit the road, to return to everyday life (or maybe Utopia, the official Boom Landing…?). But, oh dear: The car won’t start! There’s just a whimpering sound from the motor! don't panic - here’s an instruction how to push-start your car.
You an push-start any car that runs on petrol, but please don’t try this with an automatic.
This instruction works for a diesel, but you need some more power to get it going, it's more difficult.
If the battery is dead flat, e.g. if you had the headlights on for 24 hours, you will need jumper cables.
If there’s still a weak sound from the motor and you have a manual car, it’s pretty straightforward:
Get as many of your neighbours and friends as possible to help you pushing the car
Sit down behing the wheel and turn the key to ignition mode
Switch off lights, radio, aircon, etc.
Engage 2nd gear, keep clutch pushed down
Get the car moving as fast as possible with the help of 1)
Once you gained some speed, slowly release the clutch
Now you should feel a strong jerk and hear something from the motor
Push down the clutch and carefully step on the gas pedal
If the motor is not running by now and you still have a free runway ahead, return to 4)
Once the motor is running, keep it going. Keep radio, air con, etc. off for an hour or so.
