What do I need for a festival?!
Opinions diverge on the things you definitely need when you are heading to a festival. But here I present you my personal packing list which established at over 10 festivals! There you go: 1. Ticket (most important thing!) 2. your ID (Or do you wanted to be treated younger as you actually are?) 3. Wallet w/ enough money (Whats enough? Further details on this topic will follow in the next post)
4. Tent (How to choose the tent? Check out: http://howtofestival.tumblr.com/post/119361979063/how-to-find-the-right-tent) 5. Sleeping bag 6. Sleeping pad (Yes, the floor is hard. Yes,you will regret not bringing one) 7. Cap (A heatstroke isn’t fun at all. And you will be standing several hours in the sun (unless it’s pouring)) 15. Food (Buy food that doesn’t need to be chilled. A Blog post on what to eat at a festival will follow soon!) 16. Beverages (Don’t only bring beer. Think about Softdrinks and especially water as well! Stay hydrated!) Some tips for chilled drinks: http://howtofestival.tumblr.com/post/146153579153/tipp-no-4 http://howtofestival.tumblr.com/post/119193614058/tipp-no-1 17. Feel Festival (Bergheider See, Berlin, Germany) It’s not the most secret tip anymore, but it’s still an amazing festival! Set beneath a lake, halfway into the woods it’s made with a lot of love and a lot of details. It’s not like your usual festival, there is a lot of music, art and culture. A special here is: you don’t know which bands and Dj’s are performing until you arrive at the festival. That means, everybody just goes there because of the festival and not because of the music. There is also a wide range of different workshops! And with a weekend ticket price starting from 70€ it is by far not an expensive festival! Tipp No. 6 (Good nights sleep)
Even the hardest festivalhead needs some time needs some sleep.
But your camp neighbours are still partying, somewhere in the distance loud music is playing and every five minutes someone passes your tent talking very loud. And its way too bright due to the spotlights on the campground. And why the f*** is it so cold? That’s the usual conditions at night at a festival. There are some solutions: 1. You drink enough to pass out right away. (Just kidding. Don’t do so... The next day won’t be fun at all...) 2. You get yourself some earplugs. 3. Even if it looks ridiculous, get a sleep mask. 4. Take an extra blanket with you, in addition to your sleeping bag. Makes a tent a tousand times more comfy. (A bit overestimated here, but you get my point) 5. For the chilblains here, take a hot-water bottle with you. You can boil some water over the camping stove before you head to bed and you will be nice and warm. Tipp No. 5
Due to the current weather situation in Germany. I thought I might give you some tipps how to keep your stuff at the festival clean and dry.
1. Take some big garbage bags with you. They will become your ultimative gadget. -You can make yourself a rainjacket if you cut or rip 3 holes into it and put it on. - You can keep your feet dry, even if you don’t have some rubber boots with you. Just put your foot in the bag before you put your shoe on and fasten the bag with some tape. (Don’t put the bag around your shoe, it will rip within the first hour) - If your tent isn’t 100% waterproof, you can tape some garbage bags on top of it and it might enhance the water restistance.
- It it starts to rain your can put some of your fresh, dry clothes in the bag and seal it. even if your tent it underwater the clothes stay dry. And believe me, after a long and cold night there is nothing better than dry clothes! - If it’s raining really really heavily, you might want to put your sleepingbag, your pillow and your blanked into the bag during the day. So you can make sure that you catch a good few hours of sleep.
2. No rubber boots and no garbage bags? Meanwhile almost all big festivals have the opportunity to buy basic equipment on site. Just keep your eyes and ears open! 3. Oh.. you have rubber boots? Good! Then you are a step ahead of about 60% of the other visitors. Here’s a hack for more comfort: Take thick and most important long socks with you. They should be a little bit longer than the shaft of the boot. Because without those, the boots will scrub your leg terribly.
4. For just light rain, put your pillow and clothes that should stay dry inside of your sleepingbag during the day and zip it. Because even if your tent is waterproof the air will be quite humid.
Stay dry and have fun! For more hacks and tipps check out my blog!

Tipp No. 4
Here’s another one for the gloriously tasty beverage called beer! Freeze some of your beer cans, and put them in the same bag as the others. So the frozen ones are cooling the others, and on the third day the frozen ones will be thawed. Extra hack: You can put some food(sausages, steaks,...) in this bag as well, as a replacement for a fridge!
Tipp No. 3
You tried to prevent this moment as long as you could. But there’s no other way. You have to go to one of the portable loos. If you’re not the first one on this toilet you may loose your will to live. But here are two hacks which will help you at least a bit: 1. Try to find out, at what time the toilets are emptied and cleaned. And go right after this happened. (Consider putting your tent in sight of the next toilet and you can see it)
2. Its like a standing on a cliff. Never ever look down.
Basic festival stuff.
The sun is finally coming out. The temperatures rise and the festival season is finally in reach! This year will be a lot more going on on this page. So stay tuned! - Photo: Marteria, Southside Festival, 2015
Tipp No.2 (Hot tent)
Everyone knows it. After a long festival night with a lot of drinks you fall in your tent to catch a few hours of sleep. But as soon as the sun rises it gets really hot in your tent and you can’t sleep anymore.... Here’s the solution: Put an emergency blanket over your tent. Those silver and gold rustly things. Secure it with some tape and you will be fine! The sunrays will be reflected by the foil and your tent will stay cool!
Festival Trick No. 2 For camping at a festival you need a lot of stuff. But how to pack your bag that almost everything fits in? Roll up your clothes! It saves a lot of space and prevents crinkles (if your shirt is ironed unlike mine). Stack the clothes rolles in your bag and fill the remaining gaps with socks and underwear or other small things.
How to find the right tent
Tents are the most common way to sleep at the campside at a festival. There are a lot of different types of tents but how to find the right one? Here are some tips: 1. Find a double skinned one. Because due to the evaporation you'll have water on the inside walls in the morning. This effect you'll have in every tent but one with an inside tent and an outside tent will lessen that problem. And who wants to be rained on while having a hangover? 2. Calculate the space for one additional person. So if 2 persons are going to sleep in the tent, buy a 3 person tent. You'll need the additional space. Because at festivals you tend to have a lot of shit with you like cans, chairs, bottles, clothes. Have you ever slept on a can of ravioli? Let me tell you: it is far from comfy. 3. Try to find one with a vestibule. Which is basically the space in front of your tent without a floor but with a ceiling. (Often you can close this vestibule. I've experienced this as very helpful, because there you can just put you garbage bag, dirty boots and wet clothes because after 1 night and eventual rain you don't want to have those things inside your sleeping area. 4. Waterproofness. Not every tent is waterproof even if it's written on the package. So how to find out if you will get wet or not? Look at the seams from the inside. Those are often the weakest points. If there is some tape glued to the seams and if you have a hydrostatic head of 2000+ you should just be fine. But to be sure you can put some waterproofer spray on it. 5. Easy going zippers are also not bad. So if it starts raining you can get in fast and if you're gonna be sick due to some beverages you can get out quite fast. 6. Another point most people forget about is the height of the tent. Especially pop-up tents often have quite low ceilings. Changing clothes easily or just sitting comfortably is a great thing. 1,20m+ in height are totally fine. 7. The Golden Rule: always build up a newly bought tent before you go to a festival! Because there is nothing worse than a missing pole or a hole in your tent. (When you come home. Take the tent out of the package and hang it up to give it some air. Because a smelly tent isn't nice) Last but not least. A tent doesn't have to be expensive. Cheap tents can also fulfill their job. But have those points in mind. Enjoy!
Hangover cures! There are a lot of different kinds of festivals. Big ones, small ones, electronic music festivals, heavy metal, indie, alternative. Some with 80 000 visitors and some with just 8 000. But there is one thing all festivals have in common… alcohol. Beer, cocktails, longdrinks or what ever. And the aftermaths of a lot of alcohol is never good. Headache, sickness, …. But you can do something to make it less worse: 1. Drink enough water at the daytime before you start drinking, at night before you go to bed and in the morning. The symptoms of a hangover are mostly caused by dehydration. 2. Before you go to bed at night and directly after waking up in the morning. Eat a lot! Especially fat food helps to keep the hangover at a minimum. 3. Don’t drink coffee. Because coffee makes the dehydration even worse. 4. Get some of those magnesium tablets which desolve in water. Drink one glass of this stuff before you start drinking and in the morning after. It gives your body minerals.
