Fae-bruary Ficlet: Night Fae’s Protection
A short ficlet following a young woman who makes an ill advised deal in exchange for the protection of a night fae hiding in the forest.
Let me know what you think!
The air burned like fire in her lungs as she ran through the forest that night. Branches tangled her raven black hair and lashed across her face, drawing blood to the surface of her pale skin to mingle with her tears. The gnarled roots underfoot reached upwards, grabbing the hem of her indigo dress, pulling her deeper down.
Sounds of angry shouts behind her cracked like a whip on her back, pushing her forward with a gasping sob. Better the woods claim her then those men.
“Where are you running, little bird?”
Eyes wide, she barely stifled a scream as she looked for the source of the question. The voice was smooth, like velvet, but chilling. Unnatural.
“I asked you a question, little one.”
The shadows between the trees seemed dense, solid, as they pressed closer to her. She struggled to breathe, and the tears began to flood down her face.
“I didn't mean to kill him.” she whispered, chest tight. It was true. He had been drunk, all hands, and couldn't take no for an answer. It had been an accident.
The voice chuckled. “And now you need to escape?”
She nodded. The voices were getting closer, and she could only run for so long.
“I can protect you... for a price.”
“Anything.” She cried, falling to her knees. The voice was silent for a moment, and she wept, thinking it had abandoned her. Then, slowly, the shadows before her took shape. Soft speckles of gold and silver outlined a narrow, humanoid form. Eyes like pools of ink gazed at her, and pure white hair spilled down the back of the creature that slowly stepped towards her. Its arms were opening, and a slight smile danced on his lips.
“Then come to me, little one.”
She knew what he was then. Knew what she had done. But it didn't matter. With a sob she threw herself forward into his arms, screwing her eyes shut. He was cold. Colder than the man she had left in the street, and a shiver ran down her spine unbidden.
“Keep your eyes closed” he whispered, and she obliged. As the sounds of the men grew closer, her breathing grew more labored. A cold, but comforting hand caressed her back. “You're under my protection now, little one. No harm will come to you.”
Soon, the men were in the small clearing. She could hear their heavy footfalls, the snap of twigs underfoot as they searched for her. She pulled herself tighter to the fae, and he let out a low chuckle that rumbled through her being.
Suddenly the sounds changed. It started with a whisper, one so soft she wasn't even sure she had heard it. Then came the screams. Screams of terror and pain from the men in the clearing that turned the blood to ice. She ground her teeth, biting back a sob.
“It'll be over soon.” The whisper somehow drowned out the sounds around her.
Almost as quickly as it had begun, the sounds stopped. Silence echoed around them in the cold night air, and slowly she opened her eyes. The men were nowhere to be seen, not even a trace of their presence left in the woods save a few broken twigs.
“What did you do with them?” She asked, her hands shaking. The fae simply smiled, his hands sliding softly over her skin as he released her.
“That's not for you to concern yourself with.”
“And what is the price you'd ask of me?”
“Why don't we start with your name?”
