It had been a rough month, far colder and snowier than average. Heating costs had been as brutal as the cold. So when they overheard Prompto’s small panic attack over his rent and subsequent phone call to his landlord that resulted in a genuine panic attack, they decided to act. If they’d whipped out their wallets and offered him the amount he was short, he’d decline. So, like the pair of seasoned military men they were, they’d come up with a plan – an op. They were going to invade the coffee shop during Prompto’s shift.

Author’s Note: This results from a random dumb-but-amusing daydream I had while making myself coffee this morning. It's not beta-read or even really checked for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Just a random skit while I'm in "hurry-up-and-wait" mode at work.

I imagine Loqi is the type of guy to roll all over Cor in the morning when he wakes up because he's needy like a puppy and wants attention. Willing to stir his partner awake to beg for head pats and cuddles. Doesn't quit even if Cor hasn't moved all morning or night.

The Echoes of a Scream

Synopsis: Eight years into the Long Night, Cor comforts a child MT clone after a kidnapping attempt.

Author's Note: I was trying to figure out how to write Cor for a future scene in my long fic and came up with this scene.

It's set immediately in the aftermath of my fic, Scream.

“Hi there,” Cor greeted cautiously, sitting cross-legged on the hospital floor. He sat his katana by his side. He inhaled deeply through his nose. Held it for a seven-count, and slowly let it out through his mouth. His radio filled his ear with the agitated chatter of every Kingsglaive, Crownsguard, and Hunter in the city as they searched for the attempted kidnapper. He pulled it from his ear and sat it with his katana.

Eight-year-old Callie Algetty hadn’t moved from her hiding spot behind a piece of heavy hospital equipment. Her violet eyes were wide and wild, her face a vicious mosaic of dark bruises and swelling from her previous ordeal not even a day ago. One actual kidnapping, daemons, and now a second attempted kidnapping.

He focused his eyes on the scalpel she was holding.

She’d already doled out some damage with it, demonstrating familiarity with bladed weapons. She’d also apparently escaped her assailant’s hold by striking his throat and jamming a thumb to his eye. Not surprising for a child born and raised in the paramilitary.

He could probably disarm her from here. However, her arms were not in good shape, and he could easily injure her further. Better for her to put her makeshift weapon down on her own.

“That was scary, wasn’t it?” he ventured, keeping his voice low and gentle. “But you did well. I’m proud of you.”

Fresh tears traced their way down her face, and her lips quivered.

“I’ve issued a city-wide manhunt, and a guard will be posted to your bedside,” he continued. “He won’t be back — I promise.”

“I want Prompto,” Callie whimpered. “I want Iris.”

Cor kept his face neutral and carefully said, “I know, but they’re with the doctors right now.” Neither was in any shape to comfort the little girl, even though he had no doubt they’d do it anyway. Iris was recovering from surgery, and Prompto was having his wounds from the banshee debrided.

Crestfallen, her entire little body just seemed to sink in on itself. A quiet, teary moan, “Why won’t the bad guys leave me alone?”

Cor sighed; he wasn’t the kind of man who liked lying to children. This would be difficult, “You’re a kind of clone—a genetic copy of another person. We don’t have proof yet, but we think you’re a special kind of clone used in magitek cyborg research.”

“If that’s the case and you had been born in Niflheim,” he said cautiously, gauging her reaction. “You would have had special magitek parts implanted in your body.”

MT and the clones they originated from were known to the public thanks to several high-profile daemonic incursions and incidents. A look of horror spread across her poor, battered face. As the revelation sank in, horrible sobs emerged.

Prompto had warned him what her next thoughts would probably be. “Before you ask, you’re real. Less a movie clone and more like an identical twin.” A faint clatter as she dropped the scalpel to hug herself. He wasn’t going to try for it yet, though. “There’s a set of twins in your elementary school, right? And they’re different people even though they look alike.”

A ghost of a ‘yeah’ emerged from her lips.

“There might be other girls and boys who look like you, but they aren’t you,” he finished as she seemed to curl into herself. No further information, not right now. What he’d given her was far too much as it was. “Would you like a hug?”

A tearful, sobbing nod.

“Give me the knife so you don’t hurt yourself when you crawl out,” he suggested. To his relief, she offered him the scalpel. He set it behind him as the child crawled out of her hiding spot and clamored into his lap.

Cor held the small, trembling body, cupped the back of her head, and gently rocked. The child in his arms sobbed and wailed to the unfairness of this ugly, apocalyptic world.
