One of the smartest twists in Final Fantasy 8 / Final Fantasy VIII is that Griever isn’t real! At least not at first. It isn’t some lost Guardian Force. It isn’t an ancient summon Squall discovers. It’s something much more revealing: Squall’s own mental image of the ultimate power, the form strength takes inside the mind of someone who learned early that loneliness, loss, and emotional distance were safer than needing people.

Then Ultimecia makes that idea real. She extracts Griever from Squall’s mind and manifests it as an actual force he has to face in battle. That twist is what makes Griever so much more than a cool design. It turns the whole thing into a confrontation with Squall’s private mythology — the symbol of strength a lonely child invented, weaponized against the man he becomes. That’s exactly why this Griever Edition exists: to capture Squall at the point where imagined strength becomes a living storm he has to move through.

I’m still messing with my human designs of the normal horses but here is what I have so far! Cyan omitted because I want to make sure I capture her spirit correctly and I’m takin a lil extra time.
The Final Fantasy 8 Tribute Rinoa Heartilly Deserves
There’s something quietly perfect about using the flower field as the place that frames so much of Final Fantasy VIII / Final Fantasy 8.
It holds the opening and the ending, the beginning of possibility and the return of hope. And in the middle of that symbol stands Rinoa Heartilly, who more than anyone else in the story feels like the character most willing to keep choosing love, belief, and forward motion even when everything around her bends toward fear and inevitability.

That’s why this tribute piece had to keep both sides alive at once. The bloom, the petals, Angelo, and Rinoa’s quiet movement forward had to feel peaceful and sincere. But Ultimecia’s castle, the fog, the moon, and the warped sky had to stay present too, because that threat is part of what gives the hope its meaning. This is really a Final Fantasy VIII piece about duality — and about Rinoa as the person who walks straight through it without losing the ability to believe.
