My favorite pairings are the one that allow me to explore two conflicting perspectives on a clash of values and then attempt to strike a balance. In Rey and Finn, I see the conflict between belonging to society and being an individual.
Rey is a character who has lived in complete isolation, relying on no one but herself and beholden to no one but herself either. She longs to understand her place in the larger scheme of things. It makes sense to me that one of her biggest temptations would be to join up with the Empire just to belong somewhere.
On the other hand, Finn has been raised as a cog in programmatic conformist society, taught to erase his individuality, to obey superiors, and to sacrifice himself for the sake of a collective. It makes sense to me that one of his big temptations is to leave behind community altogether so that he can save himself (or, later, so he can save the few people he has developed a personal relationship with.)
What I love about Finn/Rey is that it shows that the only way to balance between the need for individuality and the need for community is by building relationships and communities that accept and appreciate you as you already are.
