book group: Tampa

Book group was small, just Pam and Andrew and Jon.

We talked about Tampa, which I found so FUCKING funny. The main character's voice is exhilarating. She makes word choices that fascinate me and make my skin crawl. She describes adolescents, who are gross, as if they are awesome, and she is super disgusted by adults.

Every one of the young singers' mouths was open in a wide O of reception as they harmonized. Due to the oily lubricants of puberty's machinery, their skin looked nearly wet in the stage lighting. It was the boxy flatness of their chests that made my wrist quicken its tempo, the effortless feather of their side-swept bangs that were just slightly too long and in their eyes. To make eye contact with the camera, the teens had to brush their bangs back by running their fingers through their hair during a close-up shot; when they did various paths of shining forehead were exposed. These glimpses of previously hidden flesh lasted only a second but made my heart quicken just as much as if they'd collectively dropped their pants.

Andrew showed us a gif that had apparently been haunting him: Elizabeth Berkley kicking someone, in a cut scene from Showgirls, with an upskirt camera angle and no underpanters. He said "You can see everything shaking!"  We watched it. You can, indeed, see everything shaking. We watched it a lot.

Jon gave me a ride home. We changed Huey Lewis's "Power of Love" to "Power of Prayer," and sang that.

Also, Jon talked for SO LONG about how very much he DOES NOT go to restaurants like Hooters and Twin Peaks and Twisted Kilt. Dang, it is well beyond the protesting one doth do when one doth go to those places, I think he doth own a franchise or something.
