To me, Kunsel is a character that's so slept on. Like that dude was Zack's best bro aside from Cloud and it's clear from the messages he sent that he cared deeply for the guy, enough to risk sending something through Shinra communications that could be seen as traitorous and put him at risk.

Honestly, I'm inclined to believe Angeal didn't really care much for joining SOLDIER. Like yes, I acknowledge his dad put a lot of hard work into getting him a sword and Angeal talks about protecting dreams and honor a lot, but I do think his main motivation for wanting to join SOLDIER was so he could protect Genesis. He wanted to help fulfill his best friend's dreams and honor, and to make sure Genesis would stay alive because war is hell.
