to tell the truth, shirabu had never put much stock in the trend of tying cherry stems with the tongue, it’s too easy for him to imagine some poor amateur swallowing one too many stems ( accidentally ) in the midst of unsuccessful attempts. what’s more… as a small child, shirabu had carried the notion that digesting parts of plants that you’re not supposed to would invite plant growth in the stomach.

of course, shirabu knows better — but he’s never been able to fully shake the image from his mind. he’d rather not accidentally swallow cherry stems, & no one needs cherry stems to be a good kisser. there’s been no scientific study or anything to say as much, as far as shirabu knows.

but still, he sits here alone at the bar, eyes fixed on a muted program playing on a mounted television. shirabu thinks the program is probably some sort of romantic sitcom to honor the upcoming romantic holiday . . . but he can’t say for sure. absently, he lifts a bourbon drink to his lips — not his drink of choice, but it seemed like it might go well with the bar’s unexpected offer of fresh cherries!

again - not his drink of choice, but he enjoys it. still, his nose wrinkles a little at the taste.

maybe it is because he’s alone & unworried about uninvited eyes —- because the couple on the silent television show are kissing, shirabu tries something new. he finishes a cherry, takes the stem, & ——

& nothing. for at least two minutes, he fights the stem in his mouth; shirabu manages only to bend the stem a little, & he’s embarrassed to have even tried. all the more so when he realizes that this moment was not as private as he may have liked. sonic ( a familiar presence at this bar ) watches him, & shirabu would like to deny the warm red that scurries to the tips of his ears.

but he’s not one to back down —- even if ( & especially when ) his pride is on the line.

shirabu maintains eye contact & politely spits the stem into a napkin. ‘ i’m sure you’re very good at ignoring things you were never meant to see, ‘ he compliments. or threatens?
