'Gold' official launch party - Glass Caves live at Fibbers
June 29 2018
With the sun cracking York's ancient flagstones outside and the Fibbers' crowd rapidly ripening inside following a brilliant set by the fragile and beautifully flawed Alleyways, we're more than ready for this evenings headliners.
10pm, the lights drop, and California Love by 2Pac/Dr Dre (or Roger Troutman - depending on your age!) is piped into the packed venue hailing the arrival to stage of Yorkshire's best kept secret, Glass Caves.
California may well know how to party, but so do Glass Caves and they're straight into 'Go', a perennial live favourite from the debut album 'Alive' whipping the crowd up into a sweat drenched frenzy. Brand new tune 'Taipai Nights' was next followed in rapid succession, and in no particular order, by 'Be Together', 'Ljubljana' and all the tracks from the 'I Do' ep, with 'Swim' enhanced and extended to include a verse or two of the Robbie Williams classic 'Angels' ('I'm loving Fibbers instead!').
Of course, this was the launch party for 'Gold', their latest single, and the ticker-tape drop mid-song ensured we celebrated that in time honoured fashion. It's a massive tune and the crowd who, to be fair, had been in fine vocal fettle all evening, belted out the chorus as if engrained in their collective DNA!
As well as the single launch, the evening was all the more significant because Glass Caves were playing their first headline set with new bassist Henry Smith and former session player, now permanent keyboardist, Eddie Clayton in the line-up - both of whom seem to have slotted in seamlessly and, more importantly, been warmly welcomed into the fold by the fans.
Alas, all good gigs end too soon and this one was no exception, but we weren't ready for sayonara just yet and neither, it seemed, were Glass Caves who returned swiftly to hammer out a suitably chaotic version of 'Out of Control' for the encore, rounding the evening off perfectly.
what a fucking sesh
