Alcohol tips for newbie writers (or non drinkers!):
At bars, people who order “chasers” after their shots are ordering something to wash down the taste of their shot with. This can be juice, soda, more alcohol, or even pickle juice
Hard liquor is generally sold in stores as shots (tiny bottles), fifths, liters, and handles or in ml (50, 100, 200 etc)
Most people can’t finish an entire fifth of hard liquor (vodka, etc) on their own without being very ill
Conversely, many people can finish an entire bottle of wine on their own without being ill
Liquor can be “bottom shelf” or “rail” or “well” -- all synonyms for the cheapest version of alcohol a bartender has. Bars generally keep several “levels” of alcohol stocked
You order a drink with the alcohol first, then the mix -- e.g., a “vodka soda” or a “Tito’s and tonic”
When you “close out a tab”, you pay for all of the drinks you’ve had that night. Either the bartender already has your card (you “opened a tab” earlier) or it was quiet enough that they just kept an eye on you and tallied your bill up at the end
“Doubles” are drinks or shots with double the standard pour of alcohol
In the US, most shots (pours) are 1.5 oz by default.
Mixed drinks (gin and tonic, vodka lemonade, cosmos, etc) are generally made up of 1-2 shots and a mixer
If you don’t specify which type of alcohol you’d like in a mixed drink (vodka cranberry, for example) the bartender will put whatever the “house” liquor is -- and this depends entirely on the establishment. A dive bar will pour rail by default, whereas a nicer tavern might make all vodka cranberries with Tito’s
PLEASE TIP YOUR BARTENDERS THEY WILL REMEMBER YOU I PROMISE
So, you've got your new fic all typed up. In your word processor, it looks like this:
But when you copy+paste it into AO3... suddenly, it looks like this:
The issue is paragraph spacing.
(Under the cut: what is is + how to avoid it + how to fix it after the fact)
What does that mean?
All word processors and all websites are set up so that paragraphs are, by default, either pressed up together or separated by some space. You know how on Tumblr, you can press the enter key once to make a new paragraph, but in a lot of word processors you need to press enter twice? That's because Tumblr displays paragraphs separated by space, but many word processors don't by default.
AO3 fics do display paragraphs with space between them. So, if you're pressing "enter" twice between every paragraph when you're writing your fic, that's gonna lead to really big gaps between your paragraphs!
How do I avoid this?
Before you start writing a fic, just change your paragraph spacing!
In Google Docs: Open the Line & paragraph spacing menu and click Add space after paragraph.
In MS Word: click the little button in the corner of the Paragraph menu to open Paragraph settings, then make sure that Spacing -> After is set to something other than 0 pt (6 pt is the default on mine):
In Ellipsus: go to Format -> Text, open the Spacing menu, and make sure that Paragraph Spacing is set above 0 (mine defaulted to 1).
Once you've got this set, make sure to update the style for "normal" text in the document so that it'll maintain the spacing (if you're not sure how to do that, google the name of your word processor plus "set paragraph styles").
Uh, I already wrote a whole fic like this. How do I fix it?
Simple but tedious answer: ctrl+a to select all text in your document, set the paragraph spacing as above, then go through and backspace once between every paragraph to remove the extra space.
Slightly more complicated but much faster answer: use find+replace to your advantage.
In MS Word: Open the Find and Replace menu. Type ^p^p in the Find box. Type ^p in the Replace box. Click Replace all.
In Google Docs: Open the Find and Replace menu. Check the box next to Use regular expressions. Enter \n(?=\n) into the Find box and nothing in the Replace box. Click Replace all.
(Ellipsus also uses regular expressions, so this should theoretically be possible there, too--but I couldn't get it to work when I tried).
Bonus: What about section breaks?
If you separate scenes by pressing "enter" an extra time or two, the above methods may not preserve that, which could cause problems—but, truthfully, I don't recommend separating scenes like that! It doesn't create much visual separation, and I don't believe most screen readers will read that in a way that makes it clear a new scene is starting.
Instead, please just use line breaks! They're visually clear, easy to insert, and screenreader-friendly. Most word processors let you insert line breaks pretty easily—but that's not super helpful for our purposes, since they often get lost when you copy+paste into the AO3 editor. What I like to do is separate my scenes with three pound signs, like this:
Then, once you paste your fic into AO3, search for ### using your browser's find function (ctrl+f on PC/cmd+f on Mac/varies on mobile browsers).
Delete the pound signs, then press the horizontal line button in the AO3 rich text editor (or type <hr> in the HTML editor).
Once you've published it, it should look like this:
Guys, if you’re ever gonna write a long fic like i am (i mean talking about 40 chapters, long chapters, ~1000 pages long) one of the biggest things i rec yall start doing is 1) give yourself a deadline it really pushes you to lock tf in and finish that thing and 2) use SMART goals. That’s what I’ve been doing as Tabloid Junkie comes to a close (11 more chapters to go!!! And then i can take a nap as yall binge read the whole thing!) i also really recommend yall get a planner even if it’s just planning oneshots or something. It can really help keep everything organized. I keep both a physical planner and notion to plan my writing days. So for the SMART goals, it’s specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound.
So for example what i originally started doing for each day was: “draft chapter 15-16” and while that does work sometimes, it doesn’t give clarity on what you should focus on for your fic specifically. So using the smart goals method when working on long-multi chaptered fics like me, can really help get further into the fic and motivate you to finish you have a clear goal on how to finish the scene/chapter. So now, this week, for example i had: “finish chapter 29: august 10-12 1968 storm scene + aftermath” and knowing me if i really lock in, i know i can finish the chapter in 3 days. So i gave myself 3 days to finish said chapter. So those are my tips for those who’re wanting to write long form fics. planning and giving yourself a deadline and using smart goals really does help get you faster to the finish line!
Hi, I don't know what to call you so I'm just gonna call your Mr Lyls 😁
I'd like to say, happy LATE birthday! (It took me a while, I've been busy xD) You're, what, 21? 20? Something like that.. I can't recall and I don't feel like rewriting this 😭
I'd just like to say once more, thank you for the MAJOR inclusivity of your fics. It means so much to me (as a queer person) to see so many different things included in your fanfics.
That aside, I'd like to ask for some tips on writing! I have a few questions.
1. How do you find motivation to write?
2. How can I make my fics longer?
I also have a question completely unrelated.. would you ever write an Arthur Leclerc fic? There's a drought of them on Ao3 and all of the ones on here are x reader.🙄 I'd love to know! I'd even help beta read if you ever write one😭
Much love and best regards,
Your biggest fan (also known as Arthur :) )
Okay first off, I am indeed 21 !!! I am also preparing a long fic that involves Leona so be ready for that...
As for tips :
-For me motivation comes when the idea seems really really good, like I really need to write the idea down before I lose the spark. It motivates me more when it comes from mutuals who ramble about it or give me material to work with!!!!
-I have not been able to write long fics for a while because this Fandom has an attention problem hence I shorten My fic writing a lot (some of my drabbles could go for 5k or more but I feel very demotivated when I see it lack some traction) HOWEVER Aapart from my bias, to write more long fics is to add mre moments for characters, like maybe from point A to Point B there could be much much more. Again you gotta think about it a lot, it does take a lot of thinking, and if you cant, just ask your friends ! Really helps to have a third eye on your draft.
As for Arthur Leclerc......he does seem cool but I don't think I would write him since I dont know him much (but If you give me material to work with I will trust me)
.......ARTHUR. AS IN. @landoscarceo ARTHUR ????????
I just started making CAI bots, so I decided to make an account for it because why not.
I want to take requests ! inbox me, be detailed and what not. if I don’t know the character, I’m fine with researching to get to know em’
bots to look forward to;
- glee bots (most likely quinn fabray)
- arcane bots (mostly cait + vi)
- yellowjacket bots (this 1 probably will have the most characters, but nat especially)
- tlou bots (ellie + maybe joel?)
- maybe the umbrella academy because I’m on s3 rn.. maybe?
- possibly enha bots. that is if i dont lose interest, and if people would want that!
that is just some I can currently imagine myself making. I’m open to all the fandoms I’m in and then some, just gotta get to it.
most of my bots will most likelyyy be f!reader, though I will try to make it mostly gender neutral.. just a warning in case future incidents.
tips are nice too because I’m still new < 3
I definitely take inspiration from creators like; @initforthethrill , @voidsuites , and @laaurie on cai. | @yameoto especially. If I didn’t get my ideas from a prompt or myself, it’s likely inspired from one of them.

i have a very controversial take that a lot of yall might not like BUT i saw it on tiktok anddddd
if you, as an artist (painter, musician, writer, etc), are publishing your work for the general public to access on social media or any easily accessible domain, you cannot bitch and whine when people have GENUINE critcism.
And no im not talking about "THIS IS CRINGE AND ASS KYS IMMEDIATLEY", im talking about fics that use aave, have continuous grammar errors, punctuation issues, or monotone dialogue. This is how you get better at your craft; not by blocking people or arguing back about the amount of time you put in-spoiler alert, a majority of people dont care.
This includes me as well. Naturally, its harder to accept genuine criticism about how I can improve my fics, and I may not even adhere to the advice or critique (which is also the right of the author/artist as well, you dont HAVE to listen to what the other person is saying!!), but if I'm publishing works on a public site then i can't be surprised when people are gonna have their fair share of feedback
Dear fic writers, as a handy tip, CA kings are not the biggest standard bed sizes in the US. A California king bed is not noticeably bigger than a regular king bed. They are actually narrower, and just slightly longer, for tall people. Its like the weird xl twins you get in a college dorm in the US.
For comparison, a queen bed is 5ft wide. A CA king is 6ft wide, but a regular king is 18 inches wider than a queen, 6'6 wide!
If you want a bigger, wider bed that looks more imposing in a room and easily fits more people (eg 3+) a regular king is actually the better option. A CA king might be what you want if you're writing basketball themed fic or other fic with really tall folks that need the extra leg room.
Or you can always opt for a custom made bed with custom made sheets if you need it to be orgy sized and your characters are wealthy enough to be doing things like that.
For reference:
King bed dimension: 6'6 wide (78 inches) x 6'8 long (80 inches)
