It still takes Hubert by surprise that a smile he once found foolish and infuriating now makes a matching expression try to slip onto his lips. All else aside, there are few people who appreciate gifts the way Ferdinand does. His joy is so warm, so earnest. Hubert can do little to stop the ice he keeps wrapped tight around himself from melting.
Biting his tongue, Hubert ducks his head as he works to master his expression. Though there’s little he can do to stop the heat rising from his face at the thought. The gift of Ferdinand’s company? Well, it certainly isn’t a gift he would turn down. Not now. “Your company would be... appreciated. I’ve been rather busy as of late and I’ve seen hardly a soul apart from Lady Edelgard. Your tea breaks have left me rather spoiled, I’m afraid.”
When he trusts himself to meet Ferdinand’s eyes, Hubert allows the tiniest of smiles to grace his lips. The slight catch to Ferdinand’s words in endearing. So much about him rather unfortunately is. Even if Hubert had not cleared the rest of his day, he would have rather a hard time turning him down now. What’s become of him? Perhaps age or war has made him soft.
But for the moment, he can allow it.
“I’ve nothing planned for the moment,” he says, with a slight nod. “Lead the way, Ferdinand. Though I believe I will leave the tea for you to enjoy. I’ve still some of the coffee you gifted me. That and your presence should tide me over for now.”
