Member: Monsta X’s Shownu x Y/N
Type: ANGST
I paced back and forth in the living room until my calves went sore. Once the burning feeling had settled deep into my muscles, I continued to walk, letting it run up my legs. My stomach was already consumed in knots, so it didn’t have much effect there. Eventually the aching feeling crept up my back and my tense shoulders began to shake. It felt like I had walked the length of that living room for days. It was funny how a few hours could seem that long when your mind was going in a million different directions.
He was supposed to have come over already.
But just as our previous relationship had affirmed, he had better things to do.
Keys jingled against the lock of my apartment door and I thought I had stopped breathing. What had previously pained me in my muscles suddenly went numb and I thought I would throw up. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, trying to calm myself for the inevitable.
I looked up as the door eased open and I thought I was going to let out a sob. He was so breathtaking. The familiar feeling of love fluttered in my heart. If it hadn’t been under the current circumstances, it seemed like any other day. He had come home from practice late, I had waited up for him, and he was ready to climb into bed with me and sleep away the angst he had acquired from the day. This wasn’t going to go like that though.
I felt myself growing angry, balling my fists until my knuckles went white. How dare he come through the door of MY apartment, looking like THAT, and resurrecting every feeling I thought I had put to rest. He was sweaty, dirty, and tired, but he still radiated beauty. It wasn’t fair.
“You’re late,” I hissed, crossing my arms and leaning against the couch behind me for balance. I would need it.
“Practice,” he sighed, waving his hand nonchalantly and walking toward the kitchen. He set the box that was in his arms on the counter.
I walked over slowly, noticing the finality in all of his motions. He may have been acting as he had every other time he came through that door, but there was something skirting around the edges of his movements. Something cold and unfeeling.
I stood on my tiptoes and looked into the box. Inside sat every gift I had every given him, every piece of clothing or artifact I had brought into his dorm, every mix CD, and every piece of jewelry. I looked down to his hands, bare of the matching couple’s ring we had always worn. I nodded slowly, trying to internalize it. He wanted to erase every trace of me.
“Hold on,” I whispered, backing up slowly and trekking down the hallway. I looked at the box, half empty, on my mattress and gazed around the room. I began meticulously searching table tops to make sure I had gotten everything of his as well, my eyes finally falling on the stuffed panda he had gotten me when Monsta X visited Hong Kong. Kenny, the panda, was a bit worse for the ware. He had experienced my tears, snot, and on one ill fated occasion, vomit. He had gone through the washer more times than I can count, but he always somehow still managed to smell like Hyunwoo. I picked him up gently and gave him a small pet, shutting my eyes before I put him into the box.
I took a deep breath before picking up the cardboard and wandering back down the hall. I sat the box beside the one Shownu had placed on the counter.
“I think that’s everything,” I nodded. Hyunwoo glanced into the box and his eyes stopped as he spotted my stuffed panda.
“That was a gift,” he said sternly, taking him from the box and setting him on the counter.
“So was half of the shit in your box,” I grumbled, not being able to get myself to look at that stupid bear.
“No,” he said, shaking his head. “No gift has ever meant more than he meant to you.”
“A lot of things meant something to me,” I sighed, shaking my head as well, trying to fight the tears attacking my lashes.
A few moments of thick silence sat between us before Hyunwoo cleared his throat.
“You sure about that?”
I audibly gasped as I looked up to him. “What in the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“I just...I just think...” Shownu continued quietly. “If I had meant something to you...we could’ve fought harder...”
“Fought...harder?” I croaked, feeling the tears begin to peak over the edge of my eyes. “Fight harder? Shownu I thought the world of you...
...you weren’t just a star to me...you were my whole damn sky! Don’t you get that?”
He remained silent as he crossed his arms, looking anywhere but at my emotional frame.
“Look at my Hyunwoo,” I sobbed. He continued to avoid my gaze.
“Look at me!” I shouted, slamming my hand on the tile of the counter. His shoulders flinched and his eyes instantly shot towards mine.
“You said we could’ve fought harder and that is the issue. Your subconscious knew to use ‘we’ because you didn’t fight at all. Why wasn’t I worth the fight to you, Hyunwoo?”
“You were...you are...” he whispered, his eyes falling from my face again.
“Then why didn’t you fight?” I gasped, erupting into another fit of sobs. Shownu hesitated for a moment, swallowing hard, as he crossed the space between us and enveloped me in his arms.
I let out a wail as I smacked his chest, overcome with frustration, anger, and as much as I hated to say it, love.
“Let go of me,” I cried. He grasped the wrist I was using to push him away and held it tight to his chest, burying his face in my hair.
“I can’t,” he croaked, emotion filling his normally calm voice. “Please.”
My breathing hitched in my chest as the words left his lips. Hyunwoo was notorious for evacuating any emotional situation, so the simple fact that he had allowed me to collapse in his arms was something different from what was normal for me. The hand that had my wrist in a vice-like grip slowly loosened and slid from my hand, to my shoulders, and tangled into my hair. He ran his fingers over the tendrils and cooed, more to himself than me.
“Please.”
